Out of interest, please can you advise of these events you refer to?.......I am keen to know what events we cannot currently handle up here

quite a few of the award show type events MTV awards and that like to have a larger controlled area there is more to the O2 than just the arena, much more space available around the arena which isn't available in town just to the way it was built.

comparing Arena's Manchester Arena licenced for 21,000, o2 20,000 but neither will get close to that on events, for the new arena to be successful it needs to cater more for much smaller concerts and events 4-7,000 cap. with it being the regular home for basketball / ice hockey which won't be hosted at the Arena due to the cost of venue etc...

The downside of all this is that it seems like a further expansion of the stadium has been kicked into the long grass. I saw yesterday that Liverpool are going to let the current planning permission for further expansion at Anfield to lapse as they have a new plan to take capacity to over 60k.

Agree. The focus should be on creating a proper home end finally in the north stand. Noticed spurs already have rail seating

Why, I thought the MEN was the biggest in Europe and voted the best indoor arena in the world a couple of years ago.

Been looking around Google for the cost of a monorail per mile.

There isn’t an exact cost.

It varied by year, design, system, etc.

It was anywhere between £50mill to £100mill+ per mile.

Piccadilly Train Station to the Etihad Campus, depending on the route, is 2 miles or less.

It isn’t cheap. :-)

I’ve posted this on numerous occasions.

I don’t know why City don’t invest in a large fleet of electric bendy buses that can be used before and after the match.

They could get a sponsor to sponsor every bus, and if they charge fans £1 each way, the buses would pay for themselves and the drivers, who could be hired for the day.

There is plenty of space on the car parks to park the buses.

If we had 20 fitting 100 people on them that gets 2000 people away from the ground, by the time they fill up get in town and get back to the ground, half an hour would have passed. I cant see anyone waiting half an hour for another bus.

The following is obviously very rough maths, but, they would be costing you upwards of £5m for 20. If 5,000 people used them pre match you'd be looking at £7,000 a match, costs would be about £2,000 per match based on £75 per driver and £500 for fuel, maintenance etc - so £5,000 profit per match day. At 25 matches a season they would have to run for 40 years to pay off.

I”m factoring sponsorship of the buses, a possible new arena, a convention centre, and other events, etc. Additional daily and weekly passenger numbers.

As it stands now, 10 buses, if that, wait outside the ground after the game, to get people into town, which is wholly inadequate.

Saying that, Boris Johnson scrapped bendy buses in London.

And they weren't universally liked by people.

One thing is for sure. The current transport system to and from the Etihad is inadequate and needs to be vastly improved if the planned arena and other attractions get built

Currently people are squashed on to trams and buses like sardines going to the match and back from town.. That isn’t proper public transport.

The only way improving the public transportation becomes viable is if there is something else built on the collar site, such as the mooted arena, that spreads the requirement more often. Its just not worthwhile spending millions on something which is used 20-30 times a year. Uniteds ground has better transport links but has to serve them, Salford Quays, Lancs Cricket and now a stop en route to the Trafford Centre.

Even then though, the metrolink may be able to cope with the increasing regularity of events if there are fewer passengers needing to use it (one third?).

The issue with building an arena is that you have to schedule events up to 2 years in advance, whereas our fixtures get moved at short notice. If we had a game on at the same time as an event (eg Champions League), it would be farcical.
