If anyone's interested, there's a second phase of consultation next week:

We are getting in touch as you asked to be kept updated on Oak View Group’s proposals for a new music, sports and entertainment venue located at the Etihad Campus in East Manchester.

Following our second phase of public consultation in November and December last year, we have been working to refine our proposals ahead of submitting a planning application. We have specifically been testing the transport strategy to ensure that it is robust and meets the needs of the existing local community. We have also been reviewing the sustainability features within the design to ensure that our venue will set new standards for live entertainment and sustainability, in line with Manchester’s Zero Carbon 2038 strategy.

With the planning application now almost ready for submission, we are providing members of the local community with an opportunity to view the latest plans and images and talk to members of our team. We will be hosting a drop-in community information session next week:

Monday 2 March, 3pm to 7:30pm in the foyer at the HSBC UK National Cycling Centre, Stuart Street, Manchester, M11 4DQ
(During this event, there will be members of Oak View Group’s team on hand to talk about the proposals and answer questions)

Tuesday 3 and Wednesday 4 March, from 7:30am to 10pm in the foyer at the HSBC UK National Cycling Centre, Stuart Street, Manchester, M11 4DQ
(Visitors will be able to view the information displays during these times, but there won’t be members of Oak View Group’s team in attendance)

Following this event, we will prepare to submit our planning application and we will update you again when the planning application has been submitted and is available to view online.

Can anyone think of a location where an arena is located next to a 50K football stadium in a suburban situation?

The one that occurs to me is Hamburg where the football ground is right next to the Colorline Arena (or whatever they call it now). Their arena is smaller though than the one planned for East Manchester..

The difference is that Hamburg's arena is served by a heavy rail line and also two S-Bahn lines so it works fairly well from what I understand. I went to an event at the Arena some years ago but it wasn't during the football season. They must be used to clashes though because they use it for ice hockey (or they did)

I think this will be the catalyst for a boom around the stadium. There is so little to do in terms of bars, places to eat and lack of anywhere to stay and that really has to change.

On Booking.com there are quite a few apartments and houses already being offered quite close by, so there will be some opportunities in the short term but hopefully the land around where the Vermillion is (Briscoe Lane/Grimshaw Lane etc) will be prime development opportunities. This land was originally the possible location for Lancs CC wasn't it, before they decided to stay at the real OT, so guessing the council are keen for it to be developed. Hopefully once that starts happening they can look at a new rail station around there or link the Metrolink from Asda to the Gateway. I personally don't think the traffic is as bad as all that at City games. I've been around the fake OT at the end of games (picking people up) and it's pretty bad even though they have many options. At City, they just need to build a multi-storey car park to generate more space & matchday income, and some footbridges to separate pedestrians from cars to improve the flow - perhaps these will come with the new arena. The better transport links can come later if needed.

I don't think it's all that uncommon in the States as the venues usually share the parking lots. in Philadelphia, for example, the arena, football and baseball stadiums are all really close to each other.

As for Europe, Stuttgart technically has 3 indoor arenas and the football stadium all right next to each other. One decent sized arena with 15k, one with 8k and one of the stands houses a 2k arena that's used for volleyball, field hockey etc.

You know what, from experience i couldnt think of anything worse than a multi storey car park. I went to concert at the liverpool arena on the docks and parked on the multi storey. Its good as its right by the arena but getting out of it afterwards was horrific. Took over an hour just to get off it and then had to deal with all the traffic around the docks, far far worse than anything ive ever had getting away from city.

It will be interesting to see what the implications are of yesterday's Heathrow court decision.

Potentially, any major development that is largely dependent on the car (such as this proposed Arena) even if permitted now runs the risk of being challenged on the grounds of contributing to climate change.

I suggest there needs to be a credible plan for public transport infrastructure improvements at this stage, not later on.

As long as events don't clash, which is what it says in the article, then with a capacity of 23k any event isnt going to put the kind of strain on transport that a city game does.

and how they going to control that

city have a a 5.30 kick off Saturday

massive band playing in the arena that Saturday night

they will build this but there will be no more roads no easier parking no more trains , no underground no monorail from the city

they might the odd more double tram on to deal with it

Detroit is exacty the same. They have baseball (comerica park), NFL (ford Feild) and recently basketball / ice hockey stadium all right next to each other. Difference there though is the seasons mostly run at different periods of the year so not common that events will be happening at the same time. What it has helped though is bring in investment and re generation into the area and on game days there is a lot to do around that area now right into the night. Look at what is happening between town and the etihad, the redevelopment is astonishing. Add the arena next to the Etihad and within a few years i can see the campus becomming such a better match day experience.
