Etihad Campus, Stadium and Collar Site Development Thread

Artists tend to have these things planned well in advanced if we can’t accommodate them they will go to the Arena, Elton John is booked in for December already at MEN, City won’t be able to dictate to premier league when we play at home constantly it will be seen as favouritism, then if they start to use it for other sporting events, basketball etc there will be clashes, it will be chaos.
Agree with what you say though I suspect Spurs will be doing similar regarding fixture requests when they start hosting NFL games
 
Can anyone think of a location where an arena is located next to a 50K football stadium in a suburban situation?

The one that occurs to me is Hamburg where the football ground is right next to the Colorline Arena (or whatever they call it now). Their arena is smaller though than the one planned for East Manchester..

The difference is that Hamburg's arena is served by a heavy rail line and also two S-Bahn lines so it works fairly well from what I understand. I went to an event at the Arena some years ago but it wasn't during the football season. They must be used to clashes though because they use it for ice hockey (or they did)

Here in Atlanta, the 70k+ (wonderful) Mercedes Benz stadium is next door to the 21k (wonderful) State Farm Arena, in a downtown location, in one of the most congested cities in America with little to no public transport links or decent Parking facilities.
It works fine ..
Great news about the new arena at Eastlands, will only help the club and the city

Thanks for the information on this. That Mercedes Stadium looks amazing. But (going off what I can see on Google maps and wikpedia) isn't the Arena and stadium served by a dedicated rail station with two transit lines running through?

I think that is the sort of infrastructure we need in Manchester to make this work because we are around 1.5 miles from the city centre here and maybe 20 minutes walk from the nearest heavy rail station (Ashburys) which is very basic (small, unstaffed and has little in the way of shelter for anyone waiting for a train)

It looks like our City owners have held fire regarding the expansion of the Etihad pending the FFP outcome that may affect other plans for development.

If found in our favour we can expect an explosion of development around the ground. There is a basic need for better access.
 
I usually walk from Piccadilly myself to/from matches. I can't see concertgoers being equally keen though. Don't they usually dress up a bit more, like for an evening out?

I dare say the concert demographic will be younger and more female than the typical football crowd. Probably less willing to walk a mile and a half in damp weather

Also, arena event goers in Manchester are used to a city centre location, in particular the train and tram connections available at Victoria. I think the public transport offering in East Manchester will be seen as a significant step backwards by many of those used to Victoria
They all managed to get there and back ok for the Take That and Spice Girls concerts.
 
Or re-open Philips Park station on the Ashton line. Just a short walk away

There’s plenty of room to build a station at the bottom of the car park where Miles Platting station was until 1995. This would be closer and have the benefit of being able to link to more lines whereas Philips Park would only be East or West.

This would be a good idea from an Eastlands perspective.

The problem might be that NetworkRail (as I understand it) are planning to spend quite a bit of money realigning the tracks through Miles Platting as part of a strategy to increase train speeds (electrification is also likely in the next 3-5 years).

Victoria-Stalybridge is now the main Transpennine route so they may not be keen to re-introduce a station at Miles Platting just where they want to see TPE trains really get moving on their way to Leeds.

Sorry, yes, meant the comment re driving/parking and 2 events at once.
The MARTA station is close by, but to be honest the network is small and doesn’t really help those in the suburbs. `
 
The gas holder and surrounding land are going to be decommissioned and sold, if im a betting man id say city will but the land along with the council and pun in a new station. The train line literally runs next to it. Looks at its proximity to the new arena.
