Or re-open Philips Park station on the Ashton line. Just a short walk away

I read somewhere a while ago (on a Rail forum, not here) that the original plan for the Commonwealth games was to re-open Park Station for use during the Games

Obviously this never happened but I haven't been able to find any corroboration that this was seriously considered at the time.

I suspect Park would probably only get about as much use as Ashburys does (maybe a few hundred matchday users?)

With the way tv chops and changes fixtures, it will be chaos because concert dates will be set in stone, tv won’t care, it will be carnage around there, the car parks for football will get priority as most will have been included in season tickets, so what if concert goers have pre booked parking and then suddenly they dump a football match on the same night?
How often is the MEN Arena used?
Couple of times a week? So dont book gigs on Tuesday or Wednesdays (or Thursdays if in the Europa ha ha) that eases any issues for mid week games.
For weekend gigs, gigs in some cases are booked 10 months in advance but most way less. So if promoters are looking to book for a gig in say September for an April gig then City know which weekend is available and which isnt.
Now for the promoter wanting to book in April for a September gig, City need to simply contact the PL before fixtures are arranged and say we want to be away that weekend but clearly there will be a limit to the amount of times we can do that

ashburys always looked busy when we first moved to the new ground

I have seen no evidence that they are not relying on most people arriving by car. Except on 'clash days' when apparently everyone extra will be walking from the city centre.
Well waking back to town after a game is like being in an army of City fans. It's rammed. it's not easy to say people travel by foot, by car or by train because many will do two i.e. walk one leg and use the car or train for the next leg.

I recall that being suggested at the time.

Artists tend to have these things planned well in advanced if we can’t accommodate them they will go to the Arena, Elton John is booked in for December already at MEN, City won’t be able to dictate to premier league when we play at home constantly it will be seen as favouritism, then if they start to use it for other sporting events, basketball etc there will be clashes, it will be chaos.

I usually walk from Piccadilly myself to/from matches. I can't see concertgoers being equally keen though. Don't they usually dress up a bit more, like for an evening out?

I dare say the concert demographic will be younger and more female than the typical football crowd. Probably less willing to walk a mile and a half in damp weather

Also, arena event goers in Manchester are used to a city centre location, in particular the train and tram connections available at Victoria. I think the public transport offering in East Manchester will be seen as a significant step backwards by many of those used to Victoria

Basketball? Wont be an issue. Couple of hundred max!
