EU Referendum Thread

I was thinking about this today.

If we stay in the EU it is surely a good thing as the EU would have an army to match Russia. And an EU police force seems logical too. Crime is increasingly cross border so why not cross border crime fight.

Economies of scale on both these issues would also save the taxpayer money.

Can any of you explain why its a bad thing?

When your nearest police station is in Copenhagen, your nearest A&E unit is in Dusseldorf and your nearest fire station in San Sebastian, the answer might occur to you.

It will certainly interesting to see the outcome of this referendum, when we eventually get it, there appears not much between right and left on the choice about exit.

If they held the vote today I would vote to stay in. I think there would be too big a cost and disruption in extricating the UK from the EU. But if we werent already part of the EU I wouldnt be voting to join. And if I had known in 1975 how the EU would develop I probably wouldnt have voted then to join.

I could still change my mind and vote No. For me the important issues aren't really those that Cameron is seeking to re-negotiate. I'm not that bothered about imposing caps on welfare benefits for immigrants or drastically curbing immigration. I'm much more bothered about how the rest of Europe perceive the future of the EU. If the goal is still ever greater integration I would vote to exit. If there's an acceptance that integration has gone as far as its going to, then I would vote to stay in. My vote will be determined by how I expect the EU to look in 20 years rather than how it is now.

In that case you will be voting no as all the major European countries are looking for greater integration and more centralization of powers

Possibly. I think Grexit, if it happens, could be a huge turning point. It will force the EU to address whether a currency union is possible without full scale political union. I expect a few countries will baulk at that prospect.

The EU has always been working towards political union. First of all there was a common market, then it was the case that you couldn't have that without some sort of economic convergence (the EMU). That turned into a common currency (the Euro) then the belief that to make the Euro work properly, you had to have full economic convergence. And that would only be achieved by political union.

Poll in the Sunday Times today

Should the UK remain in the EU

Yes 42%
No 35%
Dont know 20%
Will not vote 3%

The Tory NO campaign do not want Farage involved as they think he will make the Dont Know's vote yes

That's a bit rich because without the pressure exerted on Cameron by UKIP, we wouldn't even be having this referendum.

I think they have a good point

As it stands i will be voting out but if Farage starts banging on and on about immigration as he does then he could change my mind.

Thinking about it I tend to agree actually. I reckon Farage appeals to the around 30% who are going to vote out regardless of the campaign. The referendum will be decided by those who are persuadable and it's important the no campaign doesn't become dominated by right wing politicians who will switch these people off.

Correct Sir. That is how i see it.

The case for leaving has to be about much more than border controls and immigration or it will fail.
