if that goal stops utd buying the top forward they desperately need to partner rooney then i'll cheer it all night

That thought crossed my mind too, I'd hate someone like Lewandowski or Huntelaar up top with Rooney. Welbeck isn't awful but he's definitely not first class, hopefully the fact he's local and homegrown stop them buying a better striker for a while.

Huntelaar would be Samaras-esque in this league. Lewandowski will be a Dzeko like risk, might succeed, might fail.

Huntelaar would thrive off United's winger service, he'd be a dud for us though. He's brilliant in the box, like Gomez.

Welbeck was almost frigging invisible for 90% of the match. A couple of times he got put through and he just ran alongside the ball with no attempt to control it or take a touch to put it past the defender which allowed the defender to tackle him cleanly.

Fot the goal, IMO, he flung his leg at it and it bounced off his heel and into the goal. I find it almost impossible to believe he meant to backheel it into the net. Similar to Rooney's 'goal of the PL years' in that 99 times out of 100 that shinned overhead kick would have ended up in row z.

I'm not Defoe's biggest fan but I believe he offers more than Welbeck as a striker.

Good player Welbeck. Underrated. Bit different from anyone else that we have, can play anywhere up top or on the wings.

Good selection today from Hodgson. Dodgy passing again though; too many grafters, not enough passers. We're in a footballing time machine. Hodgson is to England what Stuart Pearce was to City tactically.

I really want to see Carroll against Spain or Italy. That would be high class entertainment either way.

We would have to call the RSPCA again for those games.

Don't know. He was excellent in the Dutch league, but other than that, (until his recent stint in the German league), he's pretty much not impressed wherever he's been. I think someone would have took the chance with him in his prime if he was 'all that'.

It didn't really work out for him at Real or Milan, but 279 goals in 428 appearances are pretty impressive career statistics. Don't think though, at 28, that he fits in with United's recent buying strategy as he'd have little resale value.
