European super league

You also have to remember that teams in other leagues less well off than the PL are trying to push for changes to the entry conditions for the CL. The PL has to have a common response to these demands.

It could be a way of ditching a corrupt FIFA. International football has become stale with fans getting bored of watching dead rubbers.

I'm more interested in watching City play the best the world has to offer than England v San Marino

While there is no denying that FIFA and UEFA is corrupted to the core and needs urgent reform, ditching CL and joining the Super League is like jumping from the mouth of one shark to another bigger one. One composed of the likes of Ross and Florentino Perez whose eyes are only on revenues and brand promotion.

International football and league football are entirely different. Establishing a Super League for clubs does not rule out future England v San Marino matches. Plus we saw City played against the best team in the world the last season and the one before.

Anyways, I'm glad that the news seems to be a false alarm for now. But it should be noted that the notion of a Super League has been supported by a number of high-profile club and league chairmen outside the PL so it might be a reality in the future.

Its a photograph. Unless the Sun have magically become mind readers they or us know nothing about what was discussed. If it is true I'd be very disappointed..Utd and Liverpool must be scared they're going to become the next Leeds/ Sheffield Wednesday right?

LOOKS LIKE IT WAS ALL A BAG OF BOLLOCKS !!!

Arsenal say they are "strongly opposed" to the formation of a breakaway European super league.

Speculation regarding a new league came after Tuesday's meeting of officials from the Gunners, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United.

A representative from the International Champions Cup series was also involved.

"Discussions were primarily around the ICC and formats of European competitions," said an Arsenal spokesman.

The ICC involves matches between several high-profile European clubs played, predominantly, as pre-season tournaments worldwide.

Any impetus for a breakaway league is believed to come from clubs in mainland Europe due to the current financial strength of the Premier League.

Dan Roan analysis: Is football about to change forever?
"Not Arsenal, nor any clubs at the meeting, are seeking changes to the Premier League and European landscape and no conversations surrounding displacing the Premier League or starting a European super league took place," added the Arsenal spokesman.

Uefa, European football's governing body, said it had no concrete proposals to change the format of its European competitions, but was constantly reviewing the situation.

"We have just gone into a new three-year cycle for Champions League and Europa League, so we cannot offer any further comment at this stage," said a Uefa spokesman.

The Premier League's new broadcasting deals, worth more than £8bn in total and due to start from the beginning of the 2016-2017 season, will dwarf the current financial rewards on offer for a successful European campaign.

The Premier League declined to comment.

This ain't Manchester City, what a fucking piss take.

I'd find it hard to watch them on a regular basis if this went ahead. Everything I despise about top level football and business. Money over any common decency. Wish these fat cats would fuck off and at least keep some of our tradition as a club and even league, intact.

To be fair the comments emanating from Bayern Munich and Barcelona suggest that something is certainly happening.

I suspect that the change suggested will be 'wild cards' in the Champions' League so that United, Milan, and Inter can be parachuted in if they fail to qualify.

It will destroy the competition as far as I am concerned. If they fail to qualify its because they are not good enough. The financial implications of this will be big. I would expect to see legal challenges from clubs adversely affected. If the teams 'who were good ten years ago' come in then other, presumably better, teams will miss out.

Bayern, Barcelona and the Italian clubs want something to happen because they're terrified about the increasing gap that is opening up between the television revenues generated by the PL and their domestic leagues.

But the English PL clubs would be insane to jeopardise the television money that the PL is hoovering up. Hence the comment by Arsenal about not displacing the PL. City and the other English clubs need to be involved in the discussions taking place simply to protect their position.

United and Liverpool would probably instinctively love the idea of automatic qualification. But they might have second thoughts when the second half of their league season is effectively reduced to playing meaningless friendlies. Sky and BT Sport might also like the idea of United and Liverpool being in the CL every season, but would think again if the knock on effect was to render their PL fixtures meaningless in the second half of many seasons.

I don't want any part of it!

I can see it though: weekends would be European Super League, we'd no longer take part in the Premier League or FL Cup and the FA Cup would be moved to mid-week so that the Euro Super League clubs could participate still (other league's cup comps are midweek). It will happen! Maybe not next year or in five years, but it will happen someday not too far in the future.

If it doesn't happen off the back of the likes of United forcing it through because they are no longer in with a shout for the CL anymore, it will certainly happen because the likes of Barca, Madrid, Bayern, Juve, Inter, Milan...cannot compete even with the likes of West Ham and Stoke for players because of the tv revenue money (imagine how much it will rise to next time, even Bournemouth could outbid the likes of Dortmund and Atléti for players!)

On the upside, people with jobs will be able to go to European away games for once!haha
