European super league

Maybe it's about a 5 team preseason tournament in the US or something?

If we're going to be breaking away from the PL with those G14 fucks I'm afraid after 34 years City will have lost me - have fun with your Super League TV Money from the Asian market, with a heavy heart I'll be off to support "FC City"
If only. From what I can gather it's an actual proposal that might well heap happen because of.. erm.... big clubs are involved. The ones with the most to lose are pushing it the most, we are just along for the ride at the moment. That's what I make of it so far. I can't imagine other English clubs going for it, I hope to fuck it causes the FA a headache.

I'd like to see the devil in the detail first before passing judgement.

If this is a replacement for the UEFA competitions and mirrors those tournaments in terms of qualification purely based on merit (with the odd place up for grabs for those qualifying for the preliminary rounds by virtue of finishing top of their countries' fair play league) then I won't have an issue with that - it could be that the clubs are pissed off with UEFA creaming off too much of the money that the Champs League/Europa League generates and wanting a bigger slice. Sadly, I suspect that isn't the case though and if it really is an invite only tournament then I've no interest in it. I view European club football as a reward for doing well enough domestically which enables you to qualify for these tournaments. Not only that, if this impacts on our domestic league in terms of reducing the amount of league fixtures then that's a double whammy. I love the buzz of watching City away in Europe but domestic football and all the rivalries that go with it are the bread and butter for me, and any negative impact on that would be seriously annoying.

The fact that we were invited leads me to think we might not be a minor part in this plan.

Would be horrible if something like this happened. Even worse jumping into bed with that lot of arseholes.

I think their trying to make pre season games more competitive, all big clubs travel so bring all games under one umbrella makes the games more interesting rather than used as kick about to generate money

The only reason clubs do preseason where they do it is to make money, though. What's more, as the stories floating around about how upset Pep is at the idea of a Manchester Derby friendly natch shows, clubs generally don't want their preseason to get competitive because it distracts players from the more important issues of fitness and learning tactics. It's youth football that needs more competitive games, not senior football.

I wish I could believe this but I just can't. I know everyone hates the Sun but I think here that we have to remember that there's no smoke without fire in places like this - the Sun knew to be at the right place at the right time to take those photos and they were able to identify an obscure US businessman just from his photo so they clearly had a tip-off. What's more, there were no representatives of Euro clubs yet they zeroed straight in on it being a challenge to the CL not the PL. The dots seem to add up to them knowing something, to my mind at least.

Would be awful if we became part of a European Super League rather than the PL and even the CL.

I'd stop supporting City, simple as that. It wouldn't even be a conscious decision to do so, I just wouldn't give a flying fuck about us as supporting a football club is an emotional thing & I'd have no emotional attachment to the club if they were to go this route.

I am 100% against any kind of tournament which doesn't reward merit, but the idea the club can just ignore it, or that the domestic 'top' clubs can just ignore City, is ridiculous. City are a big business & will have to be frontrunners either for or against. If they can't fight it, they will have to join it.

Where the power lies, is with all the other clubs who aren't invited. They get together & tell the others they are completely on their own, refuse to play them, kick them out of the various leagues, & cups, then the majority of fans in every country will have no interest in watching the euro 'superleague' & most fans of those clubs in it will be totally pissed off & want to play in the domestic leagues instead. Also the current tv deal will have a block on stuff like this happening anytime soon.

For that reason, I doubt this is about a 'superleague' as such. If one does occur, it will probably replace the Champions League, alongside the Prem & still involve qualification, but the 'old guard' will want an 'istree' clause inserted to try & give them an advantage, perhaps a playoff, for qualification.

This could be to discuss another tournament altogether, or to discuss the ramifications of the collapse of FIFA/UEFA or the schedule changes caused by the World Cup etc etc.

If all the non invited clubs in europe stand together, then they can destroy any closed shop 'superleague' imo.
