Everton (H) | Post Match Thread

Foden, Haaland and Alvarez will offer a little bit of pace and intensity which we currently need. Mahrez and Grealish are too predictable and against a stubborn, deep defence like yesterday offer little threat.
Forget this rotation of the front 3.
Get the 3 you mentioned on the attack whenever they are fit.
That said, Foden and Grealish work well together.

that is exactly how pep uses grealish and he is infact doubled down when he was asked in press conference.

Sorry mate but that is just Pep being Pep with the press, he also praised Claudio Bravo to the hilt after each calamitous display.

He is not playing in a City front 3, where 90 percent of games we are facing a parked bus, to not contribute offensively, score and create. In fact Pep said just as much after the Carabao cup match against Chelsea about wanting Grealish to score.

Pep does like to build up slowly and have all is ducks in a row, to prevent any counter, but that does not negate one of the front three from contributing in an attacking sense.

do you think he magically why he receives in that area of pitch. it is under strict instruction from pep for him to take that position.

Yes he picks up the ball in similar positions to Foden, Mahrez and anyone else who plays in those positions. Its his output after receiving the ball.

A big part of our game is based on drawing players to the ball and then swinging play to the other flank, where the space will be. Problem we have with Grealish he rarely sees the next pass, takes too many touches and then the moment has passed. We saw against Chelsea in the Carabao cup he has it in his locker to take responsibility instead of deferring it to others.

The frustration yesterday was the team set up. Playing a back 3 with Rico in midfield didn’t work. Rico was receiving lots of the ball, but just off loading it. He is receiving the ball where we need KDB to receive it, the result is KDB is forced wide.

I understand why Pep went for a back 3 as he was right thinking Everton would be reluctant to get forward too often. However, Rico in that position didn’t work. If he’s going to play Rico, play him at Right Back and get him overlapping, he has the pace and strength to do this.

My thoughts however are that Walker and Cancelo should be back in. Against a team such as Everton, whom we know will have a totally negative set up, Cancelo is a must play, due to his attacking ability.

Another frustration was the nonsense with the linesman and his ‘technology’. That lengthy stoppage whilst we were well on top, took the wind out of our sails and gave Everton a breather. How did we manage before refs and linesman were mic’d up? Why can’t they carry on or get the 4th official to take over. Fucking ridiculous.

Once they started to get into the game is when Pep should have utilised his subs; or at least immediately they equalised. We still had 26 mins plus stoppage time to get the winner, instead we just plodded on until the 87th min. Then we looked like we could Nick it, but the late subs meant we ran out of time.
That's how I saw it too.

I have to agree. Jack seems to play much better when he's on with Haaland AND Foden.

Webb has already said the bar has been raised for overturning onfield decisions (which means when the referee is told to look at the screen, it's even more likely to be a "clear and obvious" mistake).

Webb talks too much. He should just get on with making the whole thing more transparent and consistent without telling everyone what he wants to do.

What does raising the bar even mean?

It means offsides that the linesman can't possibly see can be ruled out for one millimetre as it's an issue of fact, but VAR can't ask the referee to review decisions for the things he can't possibly see like, for example, a defender treading on someone's foot, because .... well why exactly? Because it's not a matter of fact? But it is a clear and obvious error if the referee didn't see it..... Enough for a penalty? Maybe not, but let the referee decide. We don't want to let VAR re-referee the game do we?

Also, Webb (apparently) says he wants more referees to stand by their initial decisions if they think they are right. But he wants the bar for reviews to be raised to be "clearer and obviouser". So which is it? He has only just started and he is already all over the place.

All this shit does my head in. It shouldn't have to be like this.

We've not looked good in many games this season. It's been an odd one with the World Cup of course, but we're so easily countered and the risk associated with our formation isn't working because we're dropping points. The team needs to work harder on and off the ball. It's all too predictable at times. Pass-pass-pass then find Haaland. We need more. Others have to step up and try and take their man on, get in behind and score goals. We need to press with more intensity again as well. Hopefully this is all part of a plan to peak from here and we go on a run and win the league, but Arsenal look to be in excellent form. They're not showing any signs of slowing down and their ability to dig in and get a result was evident in their display at Brighton. We can chase them down, and pressure will ramp if they're still at the top come March time, but we're not showing the form which suggests we can catch them.
