Everton post-match thread

I simply don't see these issues that others seem to be seeing. If you had told me at the start of the season that we would be in the semi's of the capital one cup, topped our champs league group, and be 3 points off top, I would have snapped your hand off. If this is a bad season of football that you can't bear to watch (as some on here have been saying) all I can say is you simply can't like the game of football.

No team has a God given right to win a game and you have to respect the fact that a lot of teams below us are progressing, getting better and closing the gap on ALL the top teams. I would suggest the new influx of TV money and the fact that for 3 or so years we were hindered in the transfer market by FFP are the reason for that.

I was mainly disappointed that we didn't get the draw but it was one delicious ball from Barry and yes we gave him too much time to find the cross but overall 2.1 gives us a good chance of getting to the final and confident we can beat Everton at the Etihad as we can most teams.
The concern many fans have is the way we are playing. We are getting worse as the season is progressing. As other fans have said the last good team display for 90 minutes was Sevilla away.

With the way we are playing we could easily drop out of the top four, let alone win the title. The players seem to be lacking motivation and are not working together as a team. It's not too late for it to come good but the way we are playing is frustrating, for a team with so much talent.

I agree with your post and its the stance ive taken all season so far but the optimism requires 11 players going out every game and giving 100%. They do that and im certain we would finish the season very well indeed and land some silverware but they are not.

Our work rate is abysmal. Our tempo is abysmal. One team played last night as if it was a cup semi final and left everything out there whilst the other had some incredibly talented players barely breaking a sweat and completely abandoning and defensive responsibilities they had as part of a team whilst also doing fuck all up front to create movement and space in which to work.

The bulk of this squad downed tools for Bob because he was a firebrand yet they are doing it again with a manager who has shown them nothing but respect and is the complete opposite as a character.

I for one dont want them here to do the same to Pep or any other manager we might have just because they cant be arsed any more.

The mentality has to change once and for all.
There has been a lot of criticism of Klopp this week. For me, I can see MP trying to be more measured in the knowledge of many games to come. Running around like idiots only works for so long. Neither can players be mentally 100% on it all the time. That's not human nature. Most of this squad know how to win and when the time is right.

Anyway, I thought that the away goal was the most significant part of last night. Everton were at the top of their game but they can't and don't that every week. Now they are three main players lighter.

There are between 25 to 35 ish games left this season. To decide that the season is already over is utterly bizarre. I can only foresee improvement. If people one to be negative, that's their problem and not mine.

The result, 2-1 away in a 2 legged tie with away goals counting possible is a decent result and by no means the disaster many are making it out. We will be favourites to go through and rightly so.

its the lack of performance from too many of them thats really fucking me off right now.

That's the negative part that I can accept. However, my point is and was that most of them are seasoned professionals who will often give just enough to 'get over the line'.

Let's see who's rested for Saturday. It's noticeable how carefully Sterling is managed at his relatively tender years. We all praise ADUG/CFG for the 'bigger picture'. Part of that is not burning out all the players before the 'World's Greatest Manager' arrives in July. We can all see the state of Zabaleta. Case in point, for me.

So if we win 1-0 in second leg we go through.

Not sure we will keep a clean sheet. Recent record suggest not.

We're clearly not in a disasterous position, still in with a shout in every competition at the half way point of the season and we're all obviously hoping that at some stage the penny will drop and we'll start performing to our capabilities. Until then it's painful viewing on occasions, the worrying thing is that, like last night, the same problems keep recurring. All teams/players can have off days but the basics, tempo, work rate and desire, are not about ability they'e all about attitude and ours seems to be wrong too often at the moment. To me it looks like we're missing 'leaders' on the pitch, the only one who appears to have that attitude is Hart and, as goalkeeper, he's limited in the affect he can exert. Pellegrini has some big decisions to make over the coming weeks because whatever happens in the cup competitions he needs to keep us challenging for the league and in the right frame of mind for Kiev.
Just to clear up last nights 'offside' debate - between them, the referee and linesman got the decision spot on. No way was Lukaka impeding Willy's line of sight, if anything Mangala was, Lukaka was moving away from the direction of the initial shot not toward it. We'd have been unhappy if that has been our goal and it has been chalked off (which it probably would have been). Missed a clear penalty on Navas later.

I disagree with that mate he moved side to side therefore confusing willy therefore interfering with ply

It always feels a bit of a result to just get out of that shitty old wooden stand without it collapsing or burning down. On the pitch, just feels like I could cut and paste the same stuff that has been said for the majority of matches in the last three months or so. We simply aren't playing well enough, it used to be that we were a shambles at the back but were decent enough going forward. These days we aren't good enough anywhere on the pitch and sadly I don't see any real progress in terms of snapping out of what feels like a genuine malaise (in terms of performances relative to personnel). Yaya is a liability, I know there are still the occasional flashes of genius that save our arses but overall I think he hinders us as a team more than he helps us. There were quite a few around me last night who were furious at him. I don't feel like that, I actually feel it is quite sad to see a player who was an absolute beast physically 18 months ago just so often floundering.

My thoughts exactly, including the stand. I am amused to see exposed wiring, discarded old seats and dirty roofspaces on the concourse. It was like being back at Maine Road in the 70s.

I don't blame Yaya either. The numbskulls around me were furious too and had him down as lazy and all that but as you say, he's just physically gone. No matter what he's promised him, the manager has to bite the bullet or he will ruin the season.
