I can guarantee you one thing without been a mathematician. The day they do the draw without human interaction, will be the same day that the number of people convinced it’s all fixed will increase fifty fold. Which is probably why they still use the much easier fixable option.
Has the same thing happened with the lotteries around the world?

But to your larger point, I would never advocate for a purely ‘black box’ solution, either, as that would create even more suspicion.

I'd be surprised if tickets are priced higher than that. Maybe the ones in level 2 will be but I can't imagine the NS or SS being higher than that. I could be wrong though as demand for tickets for our home games is higher than I can ever remember
Usually I'd 100% agree, but the Haaland factor and good old fashion greed might get in the way. I hope the powers that be do the right thing.

Personally I would be fine keeping the present method but going out and grabbing two random people off the street to do it, preferably somebody who didn't even like football.
As long as those random people are pulled off the streets of Stoke I think it would be as fair (and as close-to-random) a process as possible.

Of course you are correct, as the “you must be fun at parties” and “thanks professor” responses to my posts obviously support.

For me, having being deep in the field for so long, and seeing how it is being increasingly used to influence, manipulate, (and at times control) people’s lives, it is frightening the level of apathy or outright resistance to anyone trying to raise these concerns and help educate others about the way these systems work and why they are important.

I think a lot of that comes with the “we’ve had enough of experts” and the anti-intelligencia movements over the last few decades.

And I can say from experience many entities—public and private—are absolutely capitalising on those trends to take advantage of people. Which is both sad and frustrating from my perspective.
You're far, far deeper into statistics and its applications than I ever was Seb, and your understanding of these systems and their everyday relevancy in modern life is beyond mine, but I don't want you to think that my "dog chasing its tail" remark was aimed at you, it was more about my experiences than yours :)

I too applaud your enthusiasm and desire to get these concepts out there for people to understand and learn. I just hope you have more luck than I did :)

And for the record, all but a handful of the mathematicians I have EVER met have been the MOST fun people to have at parties, possibly due to their ability to just think "differently" to the majority of the population in everything they do. It's commonly known as "being a bit mental" :)

Haha, I knew you weren’t having a go but thanks for doing the extra bit to clarify!

And I agree about mathematicians being great at parties — it’s how I met my missus and I am definitely punching well above my weight with her, so she is either crazy or I was charming and “fun” at least once!
