Garcia was a terrible choice to replace NDJ so wasn't going to rest anyone. It was clear from his youtube clips that he couldn't tackle and was terribly slow. Whoever scouted him and signed him should be ashamed. A well schooled defender could have done a better job in midfield, e.g. Boyata for all the abuse he got had better attributes than Garcia.

Fernando's footage and reputation looked a bit better but again it was clear that he was an obvious mistake after a few games. Again someone did a poor job in choosing him.

Rodwell I think was meant to be a squad player, unlike the other 2. Injuries screwed that up so I don't think anyone should shoulder blame.

I agree that we need first 11 capable players. IMO Delph is potentially that but whether he is just as bad a choice as the previous 2 can't be known till we see him play for us.

Ps I wouldn't blame the players for not being good enough. Same with Sagna and Kolorov. They should be treated respectfully but they should be replaced with better quality.

Fernando looked fine then seemed to lose a yard of pace.

I think Mancini wanted Garcia to give him the option of switching to 3 at the back. But it failed.

He has recently been preferred to Milner at infernational level & if the naked eye isn't good enough to sssess him, all his stats add up to him being at the level we require by comparison. He also is dead cheap & takes up a place in the squad which would otherwise be empty or most likely filled by a less talented player.

If he fails, we will get half our money back.

It's an absolute bargain & people moaning about it are just moaning for the sake of it imo.

This is the only bit I disagree with. If he fails we'll probably still make a profit because of the ridiculously low fee we've paid for him (think what we got for Rodwell), which makes it even more of a no brainer.
 
I thought even in the preseason Fernando looked the worst player on the pitch way too often.

And why were we chasing shadows?

We were chasing shadows because we had no pace, energy or ball winners in midfield and allowed Barcelona time and space to play. Technical ability isn't everything, as the saying goes "hard work beats talent when talents isn't prepared to work hard". The best teams are just as good off the ball in an attacking and defensive sense as they are on the ball, we're not. Delph will be a huge help in that respect and will give our attacking players more freedom.

We were chasing shadows because we couldn't keep the ball. You have to be able to keep the ball for lengthy periods at the top level. Delph won't help with that when he comes up against the very best.

That's the beauty of football, you don't have to be the best team in possession to win games. Just look at Mourinho's teams throughout the years, I'm sure they beat the scum with just 29% possession last season.

You're right, but we don't actually play like a Mourinho team.
 
Delph is a massive option for us. He's quick. Aggressive. Can beat a player. Very good engine. Knows the league. Great injury record.
8m - is a steal.
Look at his performances against the top clubs last season....

That's irrelevant, my point was that different tactics and styles of play can be just as effective as a possession based game. Hence the reason the variety Delph offers us is a very useful addition.
 
At 8 million it's nice to see City get a bargain for once. He's perfect because because he has experience at this level in this league.

Totally agree with this. He got away with it because he made a couple of last ditch tackles in the second half against Newcastle in the opening game. I actually thought in the first half of that game he was absolutely diabolical, and the rest of the season just confirmed my initial evaluation.

Delph is a huge leap forwards on Fernando. He's immeasurably better in possession, wants the ball an uses it well and qucikly when he gets it. Out of possession he'd struggle to read the game any worse than Fernando, and he's far far quicker and hungrier to win the ball back. The only possible attribute I think Fernando might be better is defending corners.
 
Anybody who is suggesting Delph is a bad signing must;

a) Give actual tangible evidence why he is a bad signing. Not just opinion. Stats preferable.

b) Not compare him to Rodwell or Sinclair. The situation is completely different. Rodwell doesn't have a footballing body. He didn't play because he was always injured, not because he was out of favour for two years. Scott Sinclair was a stop-gap who the club signed knowing he would have limited impact. Their careers post-city haven't exactly suggested we were wrong to get rid.

c) Provide the name of another CM who meets the following criteria; Could be bought on wages under £100K p/w, transfer fee less than £10 million, home-grown, left-footed, current international, under the age of 30, has a point to prove, is better than Fernando and has current premier league experience.

It isn't easy.

City have capitalised on the opportunity to sign a good decent player at a very low price. He will get games and he's dependable and tenacious. We missed that in many games last season (particularly Burnley Home and Away), and he will at least replace the energy we have lost with Milner departing. Yaya often can't be arsed to defend, and Fernandinho goes missing in games when the physicality is at it's peak. At the end of the day his job will be to break up play and get the ball 15-20 yards forward to the attackers. He is definitely capable of that. Also thought he performed well in the big occasions for Villa last season, particularly the two games at Wembley (despite the Arsenal scoreline).

I think City's scouting team have done well on this one and if anything it is surprising other teams in the top 6 (where he may have even got more games) were not sniffing about the deal.
