We don't know what the budget is though, if getting Schneiderlin for an extra £15m suddenly means we can't get all 3 of Sterling/Pogba/De Bruyne, then is it worth it?

Having said that, we have so much budgeted for Pogba that it'd an odd one to push Delph through at this stage as if Pogba falls through we have more to spend elsewhere.
We've recouped about £7m I think already in transfer fees, saved God knows how much in wages. That's before Jovetic and Dzeko leaving who are seemingly 90% out the door; that would be around £30m according to reported fees. Even if Jovetic's is an obligation to buy we could still use the fee in advance as I'm led to believe we did with Negredo.

Even then, again, this is a summer free of FFP sanctions and I wouldn't buy into the idea that an extra £15m or so on top of the fee for Delph would hinder us in our other dealings, especially with deadwood to ship out.

Do you know what? You're right. The size of the fee, although helpful, isn't the be all and end all. Maybe, those tasked with transfer policy just see a fine young player with the potential to improve still further when surrounded by better players and playing in a better team? Maybe those of us who rate this lad are right and he's not the second coming of Jamie Pollock? Time will tell. From Delph's point of view does he want another season where he earns rave reviews but wins nothing, or does he want to push himself to rise to the challenge of playing for a top side going for trophies? If I were him, I'd walk up the M6 over hot coals.

We have recouped minus the Negredo fee

Sinclair 2.5m
Boyata 1.5m
Rekik 3.5m
Tripper 1.2m Sell on

Have I missed anyone ?

I imagine that's what Sinclair and Rodwell said to themselves, in fact it's probably what most said on here about them. Gone now and we're back to square one.

That's really good going imo, almost £9 million recouped already, plus wages, all from players that it would be hard to notice their exclusion next season.

Not forgetting whatever we get for Jovetic and Dzeko :) now let's get spending! ;)

No, nobody is turning their nose up at him because of his name. That's a ridiculous view point that holds no merit no matter how many times people claim it.

With the possible signings of Sterling, Pogba and De Bruyne alongside guaranteed starters in Silva, Aguero, Yaya attacking wise then straight away you could have your 6 players minus the back 4 and 'keeper. Then you have, with regards to the centre midfield, Fernandinho and Fernando; the latter unfortunately won't be going anywhere after 1 season. Then you would have Delph a bang average, walking yellow card.

Having just broken into the England team, and being the captain of Villa with the Euro's next season he's going to come here and warm the bench more often than not and put that at risk? Questionable motives right away for me and I wouldn't doubt nor blame him that he would realize this and want away like so many other quota only players before him; Then we're back at square one again. He is not a good player being bought that happens to be cheap, he's a HG player being bought solely because he is cheap. Apologies if I don't believe he'll improve our squad and we're compromising on quality.

All these qualities he's meant to have; hard working, HG, cheap, England international. Why don't we go buy Jamie Vardy then as Edin's replacement?

We're not going to buy jamie Vardy because we don't require an extra striker, we need an extra centre midfielder, and he needs to be homegrown. I don't see how he's a walking yellow card? I could be wrong here, and apologies if i am but i think Fernandinho has a higher game:card ratio and i don't think Delph's ratio is out of the norm or that he's particularly known for picking up yellows? You're entitled to your opinion on Delph, as i am mine, you obviously think he's shit and that's not going to change anytime soon and that's fair enough. My question to you then is simply, what's the alternative? If not Delph then who? Even with Pogba, we can't go into a season with 4 centre midfielders when we're starting 3 of them 3 times a week. We need somebody else, so who? and if they're not homegrown, who gets sold to accommodate them? I've seen schneiderlin mentioned, for me, he's not significantly better than Delph, he's just flavour of the month and with united rumoured to be in for him, i don't think he'd be willing to play a backup role for us anyway when he can be a starter for the rags. Swapping Willy for another HG keeper i would of agreed with 100% last season but after seeing Joe's return to form and after hearing him speak after the final whistle of the last game of the season when he singled Willy out as the main reason for his return to form i think he's worth his place in the squad if it means we get the Joe Hart of last season again.

At worst, If he turns out as poor as you think he is, he's an extra body in midfield for a season that can do a job when called upon for a relative pittance fee who we'll likely have no problem shifting for at least our money back if not for a profit, and given his homegrown status, he's not taking up a spot in the squad that could of otherwise gone to somebody else. That, to me makes him a no brainer.

Great post. All I've got to add is that he's a much better player than he's getting credit for. In fact, I could see him replacing Milner as a bit of a fans favourite.
