Fallout 4

Hasn't had the same wow impact that 3 had during the first few hours. More on the New Vegas level.

Heard a lot of complaints about the visuals. The visuals are relatively poor compared to other AAA releases but nobody buys Fallout for top notch visuals, i'm glad they sacrifice them in favour of gameplay.

Not sure how i feel about some of the changes so far, Power armour and an early encounter with a deathclaw didn't sit well with me, i don't want to be in a position to be able to take down a deathclaw until i've put many many hours into it.

The new modding and crafting system is fantastic, on previous games you just ignore all the clutter and junk after the first hour but now there's a genuine use for everything and i find myself collecting pretty much everything wherever i go It had effectively made vendors obsolete for me so far, i'd rather scrap everything than sell and i'd rather mod a gun than buy anything on offer so far.

The combat out of VATS feels slightly better than previous games and gives you a genuinely viable way of playing it without using VATS constantly.

Not a massive fan of the new perk system and the quicker levelling. It just feels less of an achievement now levelling up. On 3 and NV it took ages to level up and when you did you had to think long and hard and make tough choices as to what perk you picked.

Map doesn't seem to be as big as i was expecting either. Nor do you get that sense of fear venturing too far from safety too early. The fact that the second main mission is to travel most of the way across the map doesn't help.

Like the borderlands-esque introduction of random legendary enemies that drop unique guns with nice perks.

Not the fallout 3 levels we all was dreaming off but I'm still absolutely loving this and i'm already hooked,

New Vegas was awesome, on a par with Fallout 3 for me.

I think it goes Fallout 3 > New Vegas > Fallout 4.

Spent 5 hours on it last night, the size of the map is huge, considering so much of it is dense and can be explored, hardly done any of the main story. Graphics could be better, but it's not really an issue.

Exactly. The map is actually bigger than Skyrim's but because Skyrim has a huge mountain right in the middle and the towns were far apart it seemed bigger than it actually was. Fallout 4's map is dense and you can't walk more than 2 minutes without tripping up on something else to see or do.

I've actually never played any of the fallout games. Always been preoccupied with others. Do I need to play through the entire series or is Fallout 4 essentially a game in and of itself? I don't have a next gen console yet, so won't be playing it any time soon, but I may go and pick up the other games dirt cheap and go through them in preparation if I really need to?

Enjoyed the few hours I put into it last night, I spent most the time crafting and modding which is an ideal addition to the game, as i found more than 70% of objects found in previous Fallout games were just obsolete and not worth looting where as now they have some use!

The visuals are as I expected considering they're using the same engine as the previous 2 fallout's, considering the size and object interaction compared to say skyrim it'd be pointless and too demanding of consoles to be able to push beyond what it already is performing at.
Thinking back to New Vegas I remember it constantly crashing on my PS3 whether that was due to high demanding performances it got to the point where I deemed it unplayable and never actually finished it.
I'm running Fallout 4 at Ultra settings on my PC and it's barely working it to its high point, there will most likely be mods available at some point like they did with Skyrim to spruce up the visuals.

Gameplay I'd say it's the same as Fallout 3 which isn't a bad thing considering it was the best of the series, wasn't too much of a fan of NV but they've taken the companion mode and made it a lot better then NV as I felt your companions just got in the way in NV or just died all the time so never bothered with them.
The VAS mode feels better as well and I like the whole slow motion instead of the stopping dead.

The weapon modding is probably my favourite new inclusion to the series though, I've always wanted some sort of weapon modding system as I always found myself just finding the most powerful gun then sticking with it ignoring all the other weapons.

Overall I'm impressed so far considering how disappointing some games have been recently. I don't feel as though it was overhyped as much as I thought MGS5 was.

Fallout 4 isn't tied into the other games, you could pick up Fallout 4 and play it and know what's going on.

Cool, cheers mate. As I say though, I can't actually play it yet, but based on what I've just read in this thread, I may go and buy Fallout 3 for peanuts today and play that since most seem to think it's the best of the series. Is it the same with 3... I can just jump straight in and not feel confused?

I was actually going to suggest that if you want a cheap option to go get Fallout 3! If you get the game of the year edition you've got countless amount of Gameplay hours right there!

Yeah Fallout 3 is the same, pretty much just jump straight in, it was also the first console edition of the series so it was kind of special in the sense that it was the one that made the series even more popular.

I never played 1 or 2 but went straight into 3 without knowing anything about it. And it was excellent, well worth getting.
