Apparently they had a meeting with GPC and retirement was mooted by them. Not sure on the circumstances around them doing that but there you go.
Story was he supposedly wanted to spend loads of money and there was a big row over it. He's blackmailed them at least once before on his own account and there's a suspicion he was complicit in Rooney's transfer request so he could pay higher wages. Perhaps they'd just had enough.

Probably the greatest manager of all time.I personally respect what he has achieved in the game.

Hopefully, now he is gone utd will become a mid table team by 2016, get relegated by 2020, go into administration, then get shut down for the good of humanity.

Paisley, Del Bosque, Capello, Jose, Clough are all his equals.

He's been one of the best of a current era but Jose will better him when all is said and done. H3e's already equalled the treble and the two European trophies.

Ferguson as good as he is never tested himself on the continent either. He wouldn't have had this power at Madrid.

Was Paisley not a better manager? I wasnt around at the time, but just going of years he served and how many trophys he won. Im not 100% but was it 20+ trophys in 8/9 years? 3 european cups.
Obviously im finding any excuse to discredit ferguson here as he is a dick

Football League First Division (6): 1975–76, 1976–77, 1978–79, 1979–80, 1981–82, 1982–83
League Cup (3): 1980–81, 1981–82, 1982–83
FA Charity Shield (6): 1974, 1976, 1977, 1979, 1980, 1982
European Cup (3): 1976–77, 1977–78, 1980–81
UEFA Cup (1): 1975–76
UEFA Super Cup (1): 1977

That's a phenomenal record. He literally dominated an era. United did so but domestically whereas Liverpool made strides across a continent.

-- Wed May 08, 2013 1:42 pm --

Thank you both.

I heard strong rumours the Bebe deal was a backhander too.

Re: Slurgie **Confirmed Retired** (merged)

"IFor the 1989–90 season, Ferguson further boosted his squad by paying large sums of money for midfielders Neil Webb, Mike Phelan and Paul Ince, as well as defender Gary Pallister and winger Danny Wallace. In September, United suffered a humiliating 5–1 away defeat against fierce rivals Manchester City. Following this and an early season run of six defeats and two draws in eight games, a banner declaring "Three years of excuses and it's still crap ... ta-ra Fergie." was displayed at Old Trafford, and many journalists and supporters called for Ferguson to be sacked.[50][51] Ferguson later described December 1989 as "the darkest period [he had] ever suffered in the game", as United ended the decade just outside the relegation zone."

Wish they would of fucked him off then to be honest! Better late than never though

David Meek said it was only recently and they put it to Piss Can that he should consider retirement, they had lost a little faith in him for whatever reason maybe they had caught him blathered in his office who knows, there is more than this than meets the eye, Hawksbee n Jacobs are going to touch on it as they have mentioned the Meek interview
