I think if you play him as a DM in a back 3 with Rodri behind him as CB it is a good even ground to play both of them, I think better than the current situation.

It would let both of them play a kind of hybrid CB/DM role.

I definitely think there’s a case for swapping Fern and Rodri. It gets Fern back in his natural position, and we utilise Rodri’s height in defence.

Fernandinho will have to wait until the end of the season to find out if he has a future at Manchester City. The Brazilian is out of contract in the summer and has already been told he’s unlikely to play in midfield for Man City again. [@jamesrobsonES]

It will be intresting to see what happens when laporte is back if him and ferny play together and we have zinchenko and cancelo at fullbacks we'll have a defence that should be very press resistant in theory.

I refuse to believe this report, there is no way we can be stupid enough not to give Ferna another year

Should have him in DM and play Garcia with Stones more often than not assuming injury allows until Laporte is back.

he might be up for one more season but we need to look for a permanent playmaker from the holding position who can start speed of movement up the pitch and who can tackle with gusto fairly.

It's not a report, Pep said it in the press conference. The 'he's been told he won't play in midfield again' bit was added in by the author, but Pep basically said as much the other day. Yesterday he said they're not going to decide anything about his contract situation until the end of the season.

I imagine it would come down to a question of fitness. They showed Txiki discussing his contract in the Amazon doc - Dinho wanted one until 2021 but the club were understandably wary of his age at the time so they were only willing to offer one unil 2020. If he makes it through the second half of the season in good shape, I think he'll get an extension and will be used as 4th CB next season, with Ota being sold and replaced. If he picks up injuries like he did in the second half of last season, then it'll probably be curtains.

Is he getting close to deserving a statue alongside Kun, Merl, and Vinnie?

I think so.

I wouldn't mind him playing further forward in front of Rodri. Having said that, you cant rely on otamendi.

Also madness if Fern isn’t given a contract extension.

You have to give the man another season.

Incredibly adaptable footballer and remarkably streetwise. Knows his way round pretty much any situation on a football pitch.

I'd keep him around forever if I could.
