Fernandinho - 2019/20 Performances

Riyad Mahrez, left, may have let slip that Fernandinho is leaving Manchester City next summer after an awkward moment filming a programme with Sky Sports. The Algerian midfielder was invited alongside team-mate Benjamin Mendy, right, for a web show on the broadcaster's YouTube channel, where the players were challenged to a present wrapping competition ahead of Christmas Day. The show starts with the pair going head to head to answer questions about Manchester City, but Mahrez was left red-faced when he was quick to answer a question about which player was set to leave the club.

He is 35 in May and though maybe we could squeeze another year from him (probably at current David Silva levels though), making it sound like we would lose 20 years old is crazy. Both him and the club would look at all available options and if either have some optimal one, than parting the ways might definitely be the best one for all. He might get year or two huge contract in China or MLS, we might have some foreign player option that requires freeing the spot for it, etc

What is particularly something I don't understand is that lot of people think he is at age where he could produce regular performances in very, very demanding position defensive midfielder is. He is fit for his age, but he is not miracle maker, he can't play each 3 days in midfield at 34-35. Time to stop thinking this is 2016-2017, he is the player very close to retirement and he has physical limits that make it impossible to do what he was doing for us in last few years. He'll never be that kind of midfield force again.

There's nothing to suggest he can't replicate the same quality of performances. The guy is seemingly in great physical shape, and a true professional.

Granted he probably can't and shouldn't be playing there twice a week, week in week out, but it was only as recent as last season that he was absolutely bossing it until he got run into the ground.

Age comes fast in mid thirties. Look at Merlin and what a difference year can make. He is obviously much better than I was at 35, but that's not an age for anyone to get any better on the pitch. If you look at some of the best players that extended their careers at top, or near it, they were all half players by then. Even Ronaldo, who's physical freak is not as good as he was before. And he plays at less demanding position than defensive midfield.

I know we could squeeze a year from Fern probably, at some reduced capacity, but some people are acting like he is still 30 at most and him in midfield would be an answer to all our problems. It wouldn't, there is a reason he was trained to play CB whole summer, it's much easier physically to play CB than DM.

But even if we could squeeze that year from him, there is a question is that the optimal best option for us. If we have an option to buy some top younger player that would serve us for decade, but we need to free a foreign spot, than not extending Fernandinho is very valid option. And on top of that, maybe he doesn't want it. Maybe he wants to have one more payday somewhere else, with less demands on his body. Both options make "if we don't sign him for another year or two, then someone needs a shooting" pretty silly one.

We're talking about Merlin declining because we can clearly see it in front of our eyes. It's been pretty consistent. Yes, time will catch up with him like it does for all, but forgetting about the years he's been alive, nothing that I've personally seen suggests that he's declining the same way at this very point in time purely in terms of performance.

Playing in less demanding leagues before he joined us has probably helped a bit too.

I'm not sure I am not seeing it at times and plus he was moved to CB to make that less visible. And yes, it was a plan, it was not forced by injuries at back.

If we don’t offer him a deal then someone needs shooting, it’d be a disgrace to not have him for at least a further 12 months.
Who’s to say he even wants a 12 month contract? I’m sure he could get multiple year offers out of some decent clubs, which I can’t really see happening with us.

He would probably get an offer of a 2-3 year contract in the MLS , China of Middle East, he is at an age where he has to look after himself financially. One last pay day and good luck to him, he has had a magnificent career.
Fernandinho has been a magnificent signing for us, a warrior and a pleasure to watch.
