GMS Academy member Joe Ball picks the 10 worst performers of the summer's transfer acquisitions...

10. Ricky Van Wolfswinkel

Norwich splashed out £8.5 million on the Dutch striker and he has yet to prove he is worth that. He has only mustered one goal this season, coming in his debut versus Everton, and has really struggled to get to grips with the English game. There is still plenty of time for the former Sporting Lisbon striker to prove the critics wrong.

9. Gary Hooper

Another Norwich striker to be disappointing. Hooper made the move from Celtic for a reported £5 million but has only scored once in the league. It is so disappointing because of his goalscoring record and form and Celtic. Like Van Wolfswinkel, they may just need time to settle in and hopefully see the best of them.

8. Arouna Kone

The Ivory Coast international hasn’t had the best of starts to his Everton career since he made the move with manager Roberto Martinez from Wigan Athletic. He is yet to score for his new club and hasn’t put in any notable performances. He has also been overshadowed by the performances of Romelu Lukaku.

7. Danny Graham

Sunderland signed the man who had done pretty well at Swansea but he failed to score in 11 games for the Wear side team. So he agreed to a loan move to Hull City at the start of the season and his goal drought has continued. No goal in nine games for the Tigers and he is getting pretty desperate to break this long drought. Hasn’t added much to the Hull team. Strange signing.

6. Iago Aspas

This player has quite simply been a disaster for Liverpool after his reported £7.7 million transfer from Celta Vigo. He has made six appearances this term and has done nothing to justify his price tag. Not Brendan Rodgers' best buy while he’s been in charge. The supporters will hope for better, but there hasn’t been anything to suggest there will.

5. Marouane Chamakh

How this player has played for Arsenal is anyone’s guess. He made the switch to Crystal Palace and has continued to show why he isn’t Premier League standard. He has bagged once for his new club but it will take a while for him to add to that as most opposition defenders have a comfortable day marking the striker.

4. Jozy Altidore

One of Paulo Di Canio’s signings. It’s been a disastrous start for the big lad and he hasn’t put in any notable performances. His goal drought continues which at the moment stands at 10 games. He joined the Black Cats after an impressive spell at AZ Alkmaar but hasn’t replicated that kind of form in the red and white stripes of Sunderland.

3. Roberto Soldado

The 28-year-old Spaniard joined Tottenham Hotspur for a club record £26 million from Valencia, which was subsequently broken by the £30 million signing of Erik Lamela. It’s not been all positive for the centre forward, he hasn’t set the place alight. He has scored four goals in the league but hasn’t put in any man of the match standard performances. It seems as though Spurs may have paid a bit too much.

2. Marouane Fellaini

£27.5 million for the big Belgian midfielder was what Manchester United paid Everton. It seems like a panic buy from David Moyes who missed out on many of his summer transfer targets. The centre midfielder has endured a tough start to his United career, putting in some below par performances and also getting sent off in a Champions League match against Real Sociedad.

1. Fernandinho

What a disastrous of a start for the Brazilian. Manchester City splashed out £30 million on the former Shakhtar Donetsk player. When a club spends that kind of money, you expect instant performances. However, he hasn’t shown to be worth half that price let alone the whole of it. He has a long way to go if he wants to be at the same level as fellow City midfielder Yaya Toure.

Deary, deary me ! Whoever wrote that needs stripping down, covering in wet newspaper and given a beating with a rubber truncheon

What a D head

Couldn't put it better myself.

Fernandinho in fact is one of the most important players in our team. A brilliant player with an endless supply of energy, which allows him to cover for Yaya's deficiencies in defence.

Spot on imho, Fernandinho is very simply nowhere near a £30m player.

which DM could we have got for £30 million ?
Fellaini...

Ferandinho is brilliant.

To put it simply, if Fernandinho isn't a 30m player than neither are players like Busquets, Khedira and J.Martinez. Top players that can do this sort of job are at a premium and that's why you pay so much for them.

I don't rate Khedira and J.Martinez.

Busquets is the best DM in the world. He is worth £50 million.

The point was that these type of players are a rare commodity. it's not as easy as saying "Fernandinho isn't worth 30m". He is when there's no one else out there capable of doing the job at a high level for less than that that pricetag.

I agree with you on Busquets.

Exactly, I wouldn't have minded testing the water with a lower bid but we got our man and it's easy to see why we wanted him. Keeps us ticking over, wins the ball back excellently and we are starting to see some of those long range passes. But of course for the £28m we paid, he should have 20 goals, 60 assists, 2000000 interceptions and saved 3 penalties by now, well at least according to the media who couldn't spot a talented player who doesn't score goals if they sat in every stadium for every game of the season.

According to the much respected Gianluca Di Marzio, who was the first to break Fernandinho to City in April, the original fee was £23.7m. But then Shakhtar apparently reneged on an agreement and hiked the price up to circa £40m, so in the end we had to reach a compromise of £34m and Fernandinho waived his loyalty bonus so City had to pay £30m.

And yes, for £30m, you won't find many available midfielders with Fernandinho's ability and versaility. You could get a very good defensive midfielder for that price, but probably not one who can also contribute going forward like Fernandinho can with his smart passing between the lines, etc. (this has been very important for us since it helps us move the ball forward quicker than when Barry was in the role).

I like this guy and you can see why he was so popular at his former club. He seems like a really nice chap who quite clearly adores his family. I think he represents all that is good in a footballer and he is very talented as well. He will be pivotal as we get deeper into the season. Very underrated in my opinion.

I agree, I think 30 Million is an excellent price, he has an abundance of quality, I find it laughable people were writing him off after two games.

Fully expect him to embarrass the Brazilian selectors tomorrow and have a World Cup winners medal come next July

Light years ahead of Paulinho. Fantastic player thank goodness for us that the Brazilian manager can't see his skill!
