Goal reports free transfer this summer
"Porto had initially agreed a contract worth €200,000 (£165,000) per month with Fernando" I find that highly suspicious. I rather doubt they've got access to all the financial details.

I had read that they were willing to from a few sites. It was only until the end of the season with a 12m buy out clause then. I think Porto thought they could pay him big wages for 5 months but then not lose him for free. Shame that didn't work out for them. !!!!!!

I bet it went down like this:

Txixi: You either let him go for a few quid now or we sign him for free.

They probably realized they couldn't sign a player of that quality in a few hours and had to buckle. With Otamendi leaving, Mangala leaving in summer and the team 1 point away from guaranteed CL they had to hold onto him.

Could Porto not just cancel his contract if they aren't going to play him, and then City pay them some compensation?

If he has six months of his contract left and say he is on 100K per week it would mean he could buy out his contract by paying 2.5m, being a free agent he could then move wherever he wanted anyway, if he wants to come with us we obviously pay him a large signing on fee which takes care of his outlay and he turns up sooner.
