Could Porto not just cancel his contract if they aren't going to play him, and then City pay them some compensation?
I'm not sure of how it works, but if Porto were to cancel his contract, then surely he would become a free agent and there would be no compensation payable. Plus if he was a free agent, I think he could be signed outside the window. Not that I know anything...

Manchester City agree deal to sign Fernando Reges in summer transfer window

<a class="postlink" href="http://metro.co.uk/2014/02/01/manchester-city-agree-deal-to-sign-fernando-reges-in-summer-transfer-window-4286515/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://metro.co.uk/2014/02/01/mancheste ... w-4286515/</a>

Manchester City are believed to have signed Porto midfielder Fernando Reges – despite failing to get the paperwork done in time on transfer deadline day.

City had made signing the Brazilian enforcer their top priority on the final day of the January transfer window, but negotiations proved difficult with his club Porto.

However, despite failing to agree a fee to bring him in now, City have reached an agreement to sign the 26-year-old in the summer when his contract expires.

The move is seen as a coup for Manuel Pellegrini’s men, with Barcelona, Inter Milan and rivals Manchester United all keen on Fernando.

It is thought the player has agreed a four-year deal and will receive a £2million signing on fee to move to the Etihad Stadium.

City are expected to announce the move at the end of the season, when they will also try again for Fernando’s Porto team-mate Eliaquim Mangala.

I meant city pay compensation as a sweetener to get them to cancel his contract as otherwise it sounds like they are going to take a hard line with him. Probably illegal anyway.

Just seen RammyBlues suggestion, that would make more sense and achieve the same.

Manchester City to sign Fernando on free transfer this summer

The Premier League club were locked in deadline day negotiations with Porto for the midfielder, as well as centre-back Eliaquim Mangala, but will have to wait until July

Manchester City have agreed a deal to bring Porto midfielder Fernando to the club this summer, Goal understands.

The Premier League leaders failed to sign Fernando on transfer deadline day, with Porto furious that the midfielder had reneged on a deal to sign a new lucrative contract at the Dragao.

Fernando will now be out of contract in the summer and he has already agreed a contract with City.

Porto wanted £7 million for the Brazil-born midfielder's signature on Friday, but City were only willing to go up to £2m.

Manuel Pellegrini's side also failed with a bid to sign Fernando's club mate Eliaquim Mangala, with Porto again holding out for a large offer, this time worth more than £40m.

The France defender was unsure on a move in mid-season, but is open to offers this summer and City will once again attempt to strike a deal.

Porto had initially agreed a contract worth €200,000 (£165,000) per month with Fernando, which would have made him the best-paid player in Portugal.

The club were furious when he made clear that he wanted to joing Manchester City, however, and refused to do business in January for anything less than £7m.

Zucullini & Fernando = 1.5m ? What a bargain

Any confirmation of these rumours of him signing a pre contract and arriving on a free in the summer?

I have just copied a report from the Metro a few posts back.....they are saying a 4year deal has already been agreed with City for the summer..

Hope its true....

Thanks

Sounds plausible.

Would City announce this or not? Any advantage to not saying anything?

City won't announce it but, if it is a done deal, it will probably leak out from somewhere in the chain.

How did we find out about the Zucullini guy?

Being reported in Portugal that Man City offered 34m euros for Mangala and 10m euros for Fernando. Porto wanted £34m and £12m.
