Manchester City to sign Fernando on free transfer this summer

The Premier League club were locked in deadline day negotiations with Porto for the midfielder, as well as centre-back Eliaquim Mangala, but will have to wait until July

Manchester City have agreed a deal to bring Porto midfielder Fernando to the club this summer, Goal understands.

The Premier League leaders failed to sign Fernando on transfer deadline day, with Porto furious that the midfielder had reneged on a deal to sign a new lucrative contract at the Dragao.

Fernando will now be out of contract in the summer and he has already agreed a contract with City.

Porto wanted £7 million for the Brazil-born midfielder's signature on Friday, but City were only willing to go up to £2m.

Manuel Pellegrini's side also failed with a bid to sign Fernando's club mate Eliaquim Mangala, with Porto again holding out for a large offer, this time worth more than £40m.

The France defender was unsure on a move in mid-season, but is open to offers this summer and City will once again attempt to strike a deal.

Porto had initially agreed a contract worth €200,000 (£165,000) per month with Fernando, which would have made him the best-paid player in Portugal.

The club were furious when he made clear that he wanted to joing Manchester City, however, and refused to do business in January for anything less than £7m.

Zucullini & Fernando = 1.5m ? What a bargain

Have we definitely got Zucullini.

It seems like it's not in City's policy to announce signings before they are at the club. Chelsea for example announced Zouma already. We haven't announced Zuculini or Fernando even though it appears they are done.

Anyways, great business IMO. We have improved our CM position without spending pretty much anything of our summer budget. So we can sell Garcia and probably Rodwell and lower our net spend.

Lets not forget Barry is leaving on a free as well. Great news if this is true.

I've read online reports(don't know if they are true)saying, Zuculini and Fernando have signed but will see out the rest of the season at their current clubs......so I would expect to see them at city over the summer.

thanks

Difference is Zuculini and Fernando have been signed (allegedly) on pre-contract agreements, whereas Zouma was bought outright and then loaned back to Saint Etienne.

A better comparison would be Lewandowski to Bayern which was announced by Bayern but was deliberate as it helps to destabilize their main title rivals.

Rob Dawson ‏@RobDawsonMEN now
Being reported in Portugal that Man City offered 34m euros for Mangala and 10m euros for Fernando. Porto wanted £34m and £12m.

Gotta love it when greedy clubs get their comeuppance. 10m for a player we are now getting for free. Would have been nice to have him for the rest of the season but knowing we already have more quality in central midfield is great news.
