Five years ago today | City 2 Liverpool 1

I think this is the greatest Premier League match of all time but it doesn’t get that recognition because it wasn’t a high scoring game (and because City won…). I doubt there has ever been a higher quality game in England between two teams playing at the peak of their powers.

I actually remember wondering afterwards how anyone else would beat Liverpool if it took that kind of performance from us to get it done. Turns out they didn’t lose another league game all season but our run of 14 wins in a row gave us the edge by a whisker.
Whisper it quietly, but winning our last 14 league games to pip formidable opposition to the title, en route to a domestic treble, remains our club's greatest ever achievement.

Going into that game, Liverpool were runaway leaders and the hype machine was in full flow. Their acolytes were declaring them the best premier league team ever and the players had started to believe it. This game was our last chance to keep the title race alive. A draw and it would have been over.

What I remember the best isn't even on that highlight video. After they equalised there's a shot of their players celebrating - Van Dyke is amongst them. Their celebration is not like ours. There's a smugness in their eyes where they are looking at each other as if to say "See - they thought they could take us on". Van Dyke is the worst but the others have it too. That Liverpool team was the most arrogant team the premier league has seen since the Keane/Neville United team and that was the night their pomposity got pricked.

Exactly
Without that win Liverpool would have won the title and done it as ‘the invincibles’. The football world owes City a great debt for that night.

If they won that match, they'd have been invincibles and centurions...

One of my all-time favourite games and one that I've watched chunks of it back many times for the quality, physicality and atmosphere. At the time the 2 best teams in the world in an unrelenting gladatorial fight to the death. Brilliant.
It was like an old style heavyweight boxing match. Punch after punch, after punch.

Bang on.

Was discussing this with my Dad. I think this team was our greatest ever. We should have won the quad that year.

David Silva in tandem with KDB with Fernandinho sat behind them smashing into people. Aguero up top with Sterling and Sane either side. Bernardo was immense that season and the likes of Gundo and Mahrez couldn’t consistently nail down a starting slot. Not forgetting Vinny at the back as well, I’m in agreement it was an our best ever team.
