One American once scoffed at the idea of a state-funded single-payer healthcare system, on the grounds that "why should I fund someone else's healthcare?"
I then asked them what happened if they didn't use any or much of their insurance funded healthcare in a year - did they get a refund of the unused amount? And if they needed to receive healthcare in excess of their premium/co-pay/deductible, how did that get funded?
They simply didn't understand the concept of an insurance policy, which is basically pooled funds to cover the overall costs of a scheme.
