There was a French film released late last year or early this year about a guy going into prison, it was released in cinemas over here and came with cracking reviews. Has anyone any idea what it was called? read the review but by the time I got round to going to see it it had finished.

Cheers

Bergman's and Kielslowski's films are good to watch. Another good film is Salo or The 120 Days of Sodom by Pier Paolo Pasolini. You need a strong stomach to watch that otherwise you will find it "shit" in every sense of the word.

Getting away from art house cinema, currently, the best horror and exploitation films are from overseas. If you are a masochist and a fan of its so bad its good films check out some of Bruno Mattie's work.

Miyazaki's films are brilliant too if anime is your thing.

Nueve Reinas or Nine Queens is a good flick and the lead actor Ricardo Darin is in another film El Hijo de la Novia/ Son of the Bride, which is very touching if you have parents in their golden years.

Whiskey is a sly film from Uruguay.

I'm surprised no one's mentioned Fellini. Lots of things to discuss with La Dolce Vita, 8 1/2 and Amarcord.

Also Pedro Almoldovar has some not-so-lighted hearted films.

Great thread this. The aforementioned La Haine. Ong Bak, Old Boy, Infernal Affairs are superb. Great shout on Cinema Paradiso. Apart from being superb, it is THE film to watch with a new bird if you're trying to prove you are both sophisticated and sensitive. Special mention for Tell No One, a lost classic sure to be remade.especially as it's a Harlan Coben novel. Has anyone seen the Taxi films from France? Daft but hugely entertaining

Haha very true. But be sure to watch it beforehand otherwise you might have to pretend you suffer from hay-fever towards the end. Not that I cried. Honest.
