Formula 1 2022

Another positive weekend for Mercedes.

Chuffed for Sainz. Comes across very modestly in comparison to LeCock.

Just got home from Silverstone. Still breathless.

Incredible entertainment and the atmosphere was tremendous. We were in Club and when Lewis overtook both Perez and Le Clerc it exploded like the Etihad when Gundo scored.

Fantastic weekend. Never been to Glasto but Silverstone must be the sporting equivalent.
The cheer when Verstappen was overtaken was very loud.

So do we think anyone of six cars/drivers can win any race now Merc appears back? If so, could be the best half season the sport has enjoyed in 40 years.

I think Mercedes are still 3rd of three, barring safety cars helping them.

I'm not sure how good the Mercedes is - yesterday, a strategy call did for Leclerc and Verstappen's car was damaged. As far as I can see, if the cars all survive unscathed, the Merc isn't that close to the others. Better than it was, yes, but not near the others.

I think potentially Mercedes can over haul Ferrari for 2nd in the constructors championship which would be a good return considering how bad this years car has been. If Verstappen hadn’t collected a piece of an Alpha Tauri under his car he would have probably drove away with that yesterday.

Mercedes have definitely improved hugely over the last couple of races but barring safety cars / technical problems the Red Bull is still the best car.

Also I do worry that both of the Ferraris and Mercedes are going to take points off each other which plays into Red Bull’s hands. RB have this to some extent with Perez flexing his muscles in the last couple of races but to nowhere near the same extent.

Verstappen is their No. 1. It isn’t so clear cut at Ferrari or Merc.

I think you're right, but you missed out the fact Hamilton drove like an absolute demon as well!

He certainly seemed more fired up than previous races.

Pretty much every race has seen the Mercedes as 3rd team though, rarely managing to overtake either of the two leading teams. They seem closer, but I think they're still a bit off doing so.

Something I can't get my head around after the race - when the final safety car came out, approx lap 40-41 I think, why did Hamilton pit again and go onto the softs? He had just pitted about 7 or so laps earlier onto the hards (I believe) - and the commentary was saying how after a few laps on those they had warmed up and were hitting the sweet spot just before the SC came out.

Why didn't he just stay out on those? Sainz pitted at the same time as he had older tyres so if Lewis had stayed out he would have held P1 and go on to win?

Even disregarding the slow pit stop from his team and the worse performance of the softs towards the end - had he avoided that last pit & stayed out surely he was favourite for the win?

If a safety car happens you change your tyres and get on some fresh rubber. Leclerc stayed out and looked like he was going in reverse, if Leclerc had done what Hamilton did, he may have had the podium rather than than the Mercedes. Some unbelievable racing yesterday, Austria could be another good one to watch next.

I get that but Hamilton's were already fairly fresh? Whereas Leclerc's were knackered

Staying on hards would have seen Hamilton lose third most likely. Le Clerc dropped from 1st to 4th on the hards as they’re fucking terrible to turn back on after they go cold.

The entire Ferrari inquest after the race was why Le Clerc didn’t stack and also go on to softs. He was fuming that he was left on the hard compound tyres.

Also, Hamilton didn’t drop a position on track by pitting so it was zero risk. If he’d have stayed out he’d have been P2, not P1, and still easily passed by Carlos behind. The soft tyre is much faster than the Hard tyre, even if the hard tyre is relatively new.

Cheers for the insight
