Formula 1 2022

I like Sainz and I’m glad he’s won a GP. Still not a fan of the disproportionate rewards a safety car can bring though and think it would have been a more exciting finish had it not happened. Worked out ideally for Sainz and Perez, which I don’t think either of them particularly deserved - Leclerc and Hamilton were the best drivers yesterday despite finishing third and fourth.

Those are the breaks though. Best gp I’ve seen in a long while.

Jesus H.....

I've only just seen this, a remarkable picture, imagine what the result would have been without that chain link fence, there to protect the spectators, they need to look into why the car flicked over the tyre barrier though.

How he managed to be completely undamaged is also remarkable, given how far he went upside down in the first place.

This is the F2 race the day before - the HALO is ugly but works - its track safety that needs a proper looking at

The gravel trap resulted in the car going airborne over the tyre wall. If you removed it there would be a situation where the driver could be going upside down into a tyre wall at a greater speed. The car freakishly hit that spectator fence at the right angle to take away the energy from the impact, it’s mind boggling how it wasn’t worse.

Zhou’s crash got the headlines however Albon took some big hits going into a concrete wall and then being hit by numerous cars. The engineering that goes into an f1 car that allows a driver to walk away intact is impressive.

Rumours circling that Riccardo is getting binned.

There was an off the cuff conversation between Riccardo and the driver he'd replaced at McLaren caught in one of the episodes of Drive to Survive where he said something along the lines of 'you could have warned me about how different the car is to drive than everything else on the grid'.
I'm not sure how or why it's so different but he's never truly seemed comfortable in the car since he got there. Shame really as he does seem a genuine guy but I fear if he gets binned that will probably be it for him in F1.

TV cameras give viewers a false imprssion of speed, it takes these crashes to bring home just how fast the cars are travelling. Seeing them live will shock you.

If they bin him off who would they get in? Gasly is talented but tied to Alpha Tauri for next year. Think Albon could do better than Williams and was unlucky at Red Bull when they got rid of him.

Yeah. You don't really get a true impression of the raw speed they're doing when you're watching on the telly. The best camera angle would probably down at kerb level, and with the camera not panning/following the car. I guess it wouldn't make for great viewing, though!

If I was McLaren I'd be after Bottas. He's too good to be in a 'retirement' team like Alfa Romeo.

He’s doing well at Alfa mixing it up with Hamilton and Russell this season. Alfa Romeo do now have a similar budget to Mercedes with the cost cap and Zhou coming along and opening up the Chinese market for sponsorship, if they do things right they could top the midfield pack in the coming seasons. McLaren have gone slightly backwards under these new regs compared to where they were last year, big change needed for someone to come and challenge Norris.

Yeah but Alfa are just Sauber with a different name. A solid midfield team but not one with ambitions of winning. They're not the proper Alfa Romeo imo.

Whereas McLaren do still have roots in that great heritage they have. They definitely have ambitions on winning races and more.

I think there's far more potential in a McLaren seat over Alfa in their current guise.

Think one thing that has sent McLaren back into the midfield rather than competing for championships was Mercedes coming into the sport and being a works team. They should have given Honda more time as well, talk of Audi looking to buy them and produce engines for them in the future.

The noise and the speed do not come across on TV.

I’ve not been for years. Might have to do a foreign one. Belgium maybe.
