Why do you speak like you're English?
gymshoe said:Mr Axe--For the record, my choice was not "sudden". The fact is I knew fuck all about football, but knew the WC was approaching in a year, and I made a conscious effort to learn the game so I could not be like the 3 hundred million Americans that could give fuck all about "soccer", but like the 3 billion people around the world who are fanatical about football. I immersed myself in La Liga, Serie A, and EPL. What I found out over time was City fans were singing louder than all others from the games I watched. And as a defensive minded "American" footballer, it was so easy to see Nigel De Jong dominate my TV screen every time City played. As I watched with my friends, I would always point out "There's that guy making a play again--God is he ferocious". And I started singing Blue Moon with the loudest fans on TV. And then Mancini showed up with his scarf...I had to have that scarf...a monster was born. I have not missed a City game since, and have made four matches live (2 in NYC, rags, and Birmingham City). I will be in LA next weekend, September for the 3rd rd League Cup game (where ever it is) and Everton, for the Derby in April, and a "mystery date" TBD, waiting for 25/8/11 posting of CL fixtures. There is so much more to my story. And to say I "suddenly chose" City is naive at best. The team earned my loyalty over time. Now, I will grant I never rode a trolley to Faroe Islands, and I never was looked down upon as a bitter as a child by rag kids, and never spent a day in Division two. But then again, EPL Football wasn't even on my TV until satellite brought it to me, let alone division 2 football. I had no idea I would catch the bug I caught, but I in fact caught it. CTID.
Steve B--If I come to UK for a tie, and for whatever reason cannot get a ticket, I will be in a pub with you watching. Sounds like the campus project may alleviate that concern, however. And I doubt there will be too much ticket competition for that 3rd round LC tie referenced above. See you there?
Liam--what can I say-- you better hope your lady doesn't like American accents. Or huge pectoral muscles (insert winking emoticon here)
And Finally Shaelumstash--I totally accept that rule, and would have it no other way.
Thanks for the support, all--looking forward to partying with you all very soon.
Gymshoe the Genuine, loving City since NDJ, great post agreed, don't think anyone can argue with that logic and reasoning, CTIDStuuuuuu said:gymshoe said:Mr Axe--For the record, my choice was not "sudden". Nice post mate. Brought a wee tear to my eye, so it did! You've made the right decision. Have fun, and WELCOME TO MANCHESTER!

Thankfully it is as I say, just a few. If someone chooses us over another team they are no less of a blue than those born into it, the question though is will they stick around should the dark days rear its ugly head once more.

gymshoe said:To other new fans: Do not be discouraged by by the loud super-minority of fans that appear not to welcome you, or see you as a lesser fan, or otherwise seem to wish to discourage you from your new passion. They in no way represent what you will find on your first excursion to Manchester. I came to Manchester for the Derby last November, and made lasting friendships with so many Blues I ran out of fingers and toes with which to count them all. I ate, drank, and sang songs until I was hoarse. I never--at any level--was discouraged by anyone that was a Blue--in fact, it was hard for me to buy a pint because of the Mancunian hospitality I received. I proudly wore my scarf everywhere, and was cheered by many passing Mancs on the street. I cannot wait to come back in September for the Everton tie, and will make two more trips this season (thank God for airline miles and hotel points). The city and City will welcome you with overwhelming good cheer--take that to the bank!
Oh, and Mancunian birds really dig American accents! See y'all in September! CTID, Jim
