I would have to consider myself one of the "elder" American supporters, having started following City back in 1996, so I can see both sides of this argument to a certain extent. There is definitely a "where were you when we were shit" mentality that even I have found myself falling into when I meet new supporters over here in the last few years. I grew up in bumfuck Wisconsin that barely had the internet in 1996, so it wasn't exactly easy finding a box score for a Premier League side (don't even start with Division One or Two), let alone watching them.
Now I have lived in Chicago for the last ten years and prior to the takeover I can count on one hand the number of American Blues I had met. Waking up at 0600 to watch matches down at a pub infested with scum and arse fans helped build character, but I have to admit it was easy from that perspective being the token City fan, it was almost a novelty over here. And we definitely don't have to put up with it everyday like you lot over there.
Fast forward to the takeover and slowly but surely you start seeing more and more City fans. In a way its good because it helps with the banter and what have you, safety in numbers I suppose, especially with our new role as the Evil Empire. At the same token a lot of them do not know anything about our history, and that's what I cannot fathom. Following City isn't cut and dry, it's a mentality that has been built on false dawns and shit nights in Division Two. So for God's sake, before you go spouting off about how you love this club, do yourself a favour and immerse yourself in its history. In this day and age it isn't difficult.
Climbing back off the soap box, welcome to all the new Blues, you've caught the bug at a good time.
As has been posted, Manchester and it's people are pretty damn tough to beat. Whether it be in Manchester or meeting Manc's abroad, you all are cut from a different material. Having been going to matches since 2003 I have never once had a bad experience when over there. It's a great City and the people do it justice. And it must be said that the women are very friendly! Cheers to all, see you in October and November.
