Fulham (H) | PL | Post-Match Thread

I think we are going to limp to January and then we must enter the market. The worrying thing for me is how fucked the players are looking this early in the season, energy levels looking very low.
The squad desperately needs a couple of reinforcements

I could do a better job as set piece coach!!! We’re shocking at corners ; defending corners & taking free kicks
We pose zero threat on corners, and simply have no ‘free kick specialist’
The absolute worst for me is throw-ins,for a manager that has built a team around ball retention, we must have the worst ball retention in the PL from throw-ins, either throwing the ball directly to the opposition or losing the second ball, not to mention foul throws, the stats must be quite astounding!

For our throw in we are fully marked up; for the oppo throw ins they have a free pass

The way I see it is this year might be the year that the last 4 years finally catches us up and bites us on the bum. We look a bit disjointed and easy to get at but you know what there is not a cat in hells chance I will have a go at pep or the team as they have given us unlimited joy these last few seasons.
We'll have more games like this where it's high scoring, could be an exciting and nail biting year ahead but I'm resigned to the fact of a top four and maybe a cup. Sounds defeatist after all we've done but I'm just being honest and looking at the bigger picture.

Totally agree regarding the amount of bodies we commit forward. 20 players in the final third makes things tough. Also means we can be countered on and have to defend running backwards. It was an issue last season too but obviously it “worked”. I just don’t like it tho. Still it’s a good job I’m not the gaffer!

It's a good job plenty of the matchday posters aren't !

Fully in agreement and feel likewise, although I'm hopeful that your forecast for the end of season is wrong.

Yep. Forgot about the atrocious throw ins. This is such an easy problem to solve. It doesn’t even take a set piece specialist - decent footballers should realise, after 15 useless high corners - a short one might have more success!

Come on.... You Lose the Game on Pens
The game is over the Referee has blown the final whistle and the Penalty shoot out is to see who goes through, I can see why you and many many others would think you lose the game but, you don't, you lose the Penalty shoot out.

Honestly mate i thought better off you, it genuinely seems like the presses drip feed of negativity is finally catching up with us, i am not saying we were at our best yesterday but we got the job done against a decent fulham side who have only conceded once per game this season. Conversely liverpool are ONE point ahead of us despite having played ONE team in the top ten and still getting dodgy reffing decisions, the arse are still behind us and have looked shaky in there last two HOME games against southampton and leicester, we are still getting players back to fitness, foden aint quite on it yet, kev has been out for a few games, the new midfield is still clicking in and gelling, we have bobb to come back potentially before christmas, the january transfer window and historically we start slow anyway and always have under pep. Its 7 games in and its really disturbing how many people are chucking in the towel based on a couple of shaky performances in games which by the way we didnt lose.

We got the three points, which is the main thing. Not sure what is going on with the defence at the moment, we seem like we are easier to get at this season. I have to give Fulham some credit, they looked dangerous when they were breaking. We could have lost the game if it wasn't for Ederson making some crucial saves.

I find our attacking play a bit boring to watch at the moment, but we were still treated to some great goals. Overall, to be unbeaten in the PL still, with quite a few key players out, and managing to win games like yesterday, shows we are in a good place. I have no doubt the team will click properly in the near future.
I think we're worrying a bit too much at this stage of the season. The fact that Rodri is out injured is making everyone nervous and colouring everyone's judgement of how the team is performing.
However, if we remember previous seasons, we always have stuttering and unconvincing performances this time of year before properly clicking just after Christmas and dominating into the business end of the season.
So everyone should stop worrying, give baldy a bit of time to adjust the team to playing without Rodri, get our injured players back fit and firing, and I think we should have a similar sort of season as we have become used to from the best team in the land and all the world and if the worst comes to the worst, we can always rely on the dippers and tarquins to bottle it at the end of the season.

That's a very good point pal. I wouldn't say I was chucking the towel in, maybe in hindsight I've gone a bit early saying what I said. We're notoriously slow starters but like you say we're only 1 point off top spot with injuries and not having a settled starting 11 but there does seem to be this element of teams breaking on us and either scoring or nearly scoring.
Could be the fact we play high up so we're exposed to be exploited by teams getting in behind us. We'll see.

I agree about throw-ins they have been doing my head in for years

Just watched the highlights and Fulham played quite well. We weren't on top form and a few players were largely ineffective. A couple of nice strikes from us got the goals when needed but I'm glad Traore didn't have his finishing boots on. That second goal of theirs was diabolical from us defensively and we're going to have to tighten up at the back. Hope Kev's back soon.
Luckily, Traore doesn't have any shooting boots.
Fast as fuck, shit at finishing.
Always has been.

Not too concerned about Liverpool or Arsenal, or who's had the easier fixtures.

However we can't keep defending so lethargically, as sooner or later we'll start dropping silly points. Even at West Ham we gifted them two opportunities in the first minute.

Also without Rodri we've started losing the ball and getting caught on the counter attack, even from our own throw ins.

Mother of God! If I can see from Block 219 that Kovacic rarely uses his left foot, and can't use pace to compensate, then why the fuck is Doku aiming a throw in for outside his left foot so that Kovacic turns blind and straight into a Fulham interception

Our lack of pace is scarey, can you imagine facing Real Madrids front three, watching Traore go past Walker yesterday it’s the first thing I thought, Vinicius, Mbappe would relish playing us with such a highline.

Tell you what. Just watching the match now. That Fulham side will take points off more than a few, including our rivals, this season. I'd put good money on it.
Traore definitely — definitely — should have put them 2-0 up. Fast runner. Lucky that he's so shit at finishing, eh?
Silva has a nice team in there, well drilled, can counter, can keep the ball when needed. Liked them more than i thought.
