GAA

Kerry are the favourites now. Have Mayo one last intense push in them? They won't get away with a similar first half in the final as they had today. I thought it was gone at HT. 6 points down.
I was at the final in 97 when the great Maurice Fitzgerald destroyed us. Couldn't get a ticket for the Mayo end so was mixed in with the kingdom fans. It was a hard watch. We had only come over for the match so went home on the ferry in silence.

The one the year before (against Meath, after a replay) was the one they really should have won. They left that one behind them. Losing Liam McHale to the early sending off following the mass brawl did for them, he was one of the most skillful players in the country at that time.

Great match from half time onwards
Looked to be heading towards a comfortable Dublin win up to then
Think in the end they’ve just lost too many class players over the past few seasons

keegan and conroy were immense
From a Dub perspective, it’s no harm. It’s the end of an era and a rebuild is required to reach the same levels again and it’s not certain that Dessie Farrell is the man to do it.
I guess we’ll find out what the appetite is.
There is no love lost between Mayo and Dublin and TBH for all the talk of black arts I think you’ll find Dubs feel Mayo themselves have played a big part in that by their own actions down the years.

But Mayo have been knocking on the door for a long time, so now is not the time for sour grapes in my view. Great respect has to be given to the county board and to the players and various panels through the years that have maintained the high standard needed to consistently make finals.
Good luck to Mayo. I think that hard grind will stand to them especially if Kerry essentially get a by into the final.

Is this your year?

You chucked it away on the replay year with us too.

True. But the '96 game still rankles. A shocking display by the referee Pat McAneaney (sp?). A Monaghan man, living and working in Meath. He could have sent off 3 or 4 from each team, easily. The fact is, we lost a far more influential player for us than Meath did. McHale wasn't an innocent bystander, let's be clear. But he was extremely unlucky to get picked out by the referee.

My last word on it tonight.
I haven’t missed soccer (football) at all. I didn’t even watch the Euros.
Gaelic football and hurling has been so much better. More real as a sport, if that makes sense.

I’m sure I’ll get into it again tomorrow.

I delivered coal to Liam McHale in Ballina when I was 14. He was a good basketballer as well.
