Gareth Bale

They don't even need him, that's the annoying thing. They only want to go and get him to one up Barca and its sad. They have Isco, Ronaldo, Ozil, Modric, Di Maria all vying for the 3 positions behind the striker, he isn't necessary. And the way at which they're trying to get him through the media is ridiculous, they just make up quotes and stories to unsettle him. It was the same with Isco and I think that's why it irritates me so much, I just can't stand Madrid and the under hand tactics they use to get their own way. I personally hope Spurs tell them to swivel.

100% agree! Even Modric now is just a rotational squad player. It's going to be a big change f he goes and I'm not just talking about the inclusion of Champions League football.

I admire Levy a bit for "standing up to the man". Why would Bale sign to 2016 if he wanted out so bad? At this stage, teams are going to know how much Spurs are working with and knowing its late in the market, the prying is going to waste time and they may only end up with 1 to 2 players realistically. Not worth the gamble.

Personally I think not selling Bale would represent a much bigger gamble - but I think Levy's already decided he's gone and is just being sensible turning down the first offer. Spurs don't need to be signing world class players this summer as their focus should be establishing themselves in the Top 4 - there is plenty of time and lots of very good players available - bearing in mind they might sign Soldado during this saga - in my opinion a sign Bale has already gone.

He signed a contract till 2016. Soldado may be signed before all this blows over, the Soldado's and Paulinho's of the world were being brought over to play with Bale, that's how you solidify being Top 4. Not bringing new guys in and selling your best player in hopes you can challenge again next year. That's 1 step forward 5 steps back.

Absurd. If the reports are true and that Real would include Di Maria and Coentrao in a swap deal with upwards of £50mil cash then spurs could go out and buy 2 or 3 players quality players and improve the team and make profits on selling on some of those players later down the line. Luis Muriel, Hernanes and Bafetembi Gomis would all improve their squad and could all be bought for a total not exceeding £60 mil. So essentially Spurs could at worst spend £10 million of their own money and come back with 5 players, if that is n't good business I don't know what is.

Whilst on the face of it, it seems Spurs could 'just go out and get 5 great players' with the Bale money, what people fail to realise is that wages would very much have to be taken into account.

Not sure what Bale is on per week right now, but guarantee Di Maria would want a massive wage to go there from RM (probably equal to or above what Bale is currently on), as too Contreao. Add the wages of these '2 or 3 extra great players' and whilst they might come out around even in net transfer spend, their weekly wage bill would be astronomical.

Add to the fact that they have a new stadium to pay for and I think you'll be surprised just how much of the Bale money remains within the club coffers (if they sell).

In theory it sounds good but assumes players like di maria would be happy to go to spurs and that real pay the remaining 50 million in one go to enable spurs to go and buy 2 or 3 other quality players.

Also, wouldn't be insignificant amounts of money for levy having to swap 1 top wage for 5! Di maria on his own would demand more than what bale is currently on.

Thats true, however they could include incentives like our new contracts and I doubt there is much difference between what spurs were offering Bale to renew and Di Maria and Coentrao's wages. Di Maria would n't have much choice if he want to play football if they get Bale there is no place for him there so his bargaining in terms of wages would be vastly reduced. The three players I mentioned would n't that much in wages and would either add to the team, or squad a new dimension or have the potential to double their money later down the line in the case of a 15-20 mil deal for Muriel.

Bingo in theory all this RM/Bale talk sounds good but frankly this deal only benefits RM if it happens because they get a world class player they can afford to pay while Spurs are left scrambling. Realistically it doesn't work out for them. They can afford to bump up Bale's wages but not pay top wages for a range of 2-5 players.

Look at us bringing the wages down to a considerable level than they have been before. You think Spurs want to go in the opposite direction?

The wages issue is a distraction tactic, they can either incentivise the contracts with bonus clauses or give players a greater share of image rights and ramp up the marketing(they will make more money from alternative revenue streams and shirt sales if they are in the CL). If Spurs make the CL 2 years running then they will have easily accounted for the wages over the length of the contracts. It is just Spurs playing the old accountancy game when they should either accept they have to sit in 5th to 7th or play a calculated risk and spend some money for once.
