"Gareth Barry is awful"

This isn't the first time we've had a thread on people slagging Gareth Barry, I'll remind you of my post from earlier this year (amended slighlty)....

Gareth has been overlooked for the credit he deserves by media and fans for ages.

I've worked at Villa for years and he was consistently there best player for many, many seasons. I was over the moon when City signed him.

Those that argue Parker and Carrick are better players should give there head a shake. Gareth has played over 500 Premier League games, and over 50 times for England under 5 different managers.

Parker had one good season with West Ham (a relegation season) and suddenly became the Media darling, he's played far less games, some in lower leagues and has less England caps.
Carrick has played less games as well, again some in lower leagues, and has half the England caps, and Gareth's scored more goals than both.

Villa fan's won't give him credit now because he left them for a team going places, they just bring out the 'gone for money' line. They could certainly do with him now.

I for one, am delighted he's at our club and played so well last season.

I will add that those who bring up the old chestnut of GB being slow in the world cup game against Germany ought to remember GB has never had loads of pace, he's not that sort of player, and that there were 9 other outfield players who didn't even try to catch Ozil.

Has been superb for us and a bargain, gets stripped for pace the odd time but that's not his game / fault...
One of the first names on Mancini's team sheet every week. Says it all.
Would agree 100% and we have now signed his understudy.

My favourite player in the squad, and probably the squads favourite player.

It was great reading about Clichy, Silva and Lescott singing his praises last season. He deserves the praise he gets from us, and when someone slags him off I just laugh. I'd take Barry for the job he does over nearly any other player in England at the moment. He has abit of everything besides pace, yet he still made the most tackles for us last season.

The people who sit near me slate Barry but love AJ. I thought I was the only one who saw the quality GB brings to the team and its value to it. I am not AJs greatest fan tbh but most fans near me rave about him. Glad to read here I am not alone in this view.

Great player. He has a bad game we lose. He plays well we win. He just doesn't do as noticeable job as silva.

Vills fans know how important he is.
Barry was a class act for us for years.

I remember seeing him thrown in at centre back when he was 17 and looked like he'd been playing there his whole life.

O'Leary was literally minutes from flogging him to Pompey for £4m years ago then he got sacked. O'Neill came in, gave him the armband and stuck him in the middle. Best thing he ever did.

Barry was class for us. His sense of calmness on the ball and his positioning on the field is class.

We've not replaced him since he left.
Good post! Glad you still think of him like that.

The thing I don't get about many other sets of fans when they say things like "Gaz Baz is shit" is that I can see the positives in many other non-fashionable players who are just like Barry. So why can't they see the qualities in Gareth?

He gets slated because other fans only see him playing for England. And every time he does he gets left for dead when half the team bomb forward and lose the ball and don't bother getting back. Having to cover for Gerrard Lampard Ashley Cole and Glen Johnson at the same time is just never going to work. His role should be the Pirlo role, with another player in there to break up play and put into the big tackles a la de Jong. He is not a watercarrier kind of player, never has been and never will be.

Play to his strengths he's phenomenal, throw him into a role he's clearly not suitable for and what do people expect! But because he doesn't run round like a headless chicken like little Scotty Parker he's shit

People in this country like to think they know all about players who they've not watched properly. I know about City players but the majority of the rest of the league, I have never watched in detail. I mean properly watched over a period of games, looking at their strengths and weaknesses. Rodwell for example, I've seen him play but I wasn't paying much attention to him. I'll happily admit that but too many people think they are an expert on every player in the world when really they've read a few reports and seen some highlights.

As has been said, Barry will never stand out on MOTD and therefore people who don't watch him properly think he's shit.
