Garry Cook resigns (merged)

What we haven't seen is Marwood's email to Cook that brought on this reply.

If all the reports about Cooks family are true he was in all probability going to leave us before the end of this season in any case.

Wouldn't be surprised if a statement regarding Marwood leaving us comes sooner rather than later as well.

Fortunately what goes on in the board room has little effect on the players on match day.

Cook either lied and tried to cover it up or just plain lied ( maybe in an attempt to protect a mate ).

Once uncovered he would have been told to resign , offer his resignation or be sacked.

He took the best option but I suspect we may not have heard the last of the fall out.

Bill Gates strikes again.

If you are going to communicate something that could end up biting you in the bum do it with Alexander Graham Bells best friend at worst.

Rest assured that the club know the full story of who's behind all this. and it's possible that Cook isn't the only one who's told a little fib.

Could also be coincidence that this piece appeared the The National newspaper today;

Exactly how many cooks does it take to spoil the broth?

In Manchester City's case, a growing lynch mob claimed the answer was just one: Garry Cook. The chief executive fell on his sword in the wake of a storm created by him apparently mocking a cancer sufferer via email.

Among those demanding his head in the broth pot is Ian Wright, the ex-Arsenal player. "How can anyone think it is possibly acceptable to joke about someone suffering from cancer," he asked before weighing in with the bromide: "You can have all the money in the world but you can't buy class." Seeing as Wright likes cliches so much, here is another: people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

As a player, Wright was reported to the English Football Association for verbally abusing a linesman with physical deformities. He might like to consider this before posing as a champion of the afflicted.

Cook has denied writing the email - he blames a hacker - but, even if he did, it has some key mitigating features. Most crucially, it was supposed to be a private message from Cook to his friend and City colleague, Brian Marwood. If genuine, it was not intended to be seen by Dr Anthonia Onuoha, who was representing her son in a contract dispute with City. She had e-mailed Marwood to say that while her "body might be ravaged by cancer and ongoing chemotherapy", she remained able to negotiate.

The response from Cook's account read: "Ravaged with it!! I don't know how you sleep at night. You used to be such a nice man when I worked with you at nike. G." Yes, the mail has a light-hearted tone, but it could easily be aimed at the black farce of the situation, not Dr Onuoha's misfortune.

Put yourself in Marwood's shoes. If you were playing hardball - that is, doing your job and representing the best interests of your club - with a cancer-stricken woman, how would you feel about it? Not great, I imagine.

What if she took the opportunity to remind you of her illness, using emotive words such as "ravaged"? Would you appreciate the support of your peers, even expressed as mock outrage at your perceived villainy? I would.

If Cook did write that email, then he was probably trying to cheer up a colleague who found himself in an unenviable position. If he foolishly sent it to the wrong person … well, he would not be the first.

What offends me more than this private "mockery" of Dr Onuoha's cancer is the unashamed readiness of others to use it as a weapon against City. These people are not really offended by a slightly jocular email. We have all said more crass things when we thought nobody was listening.

No, they are offended that Manchester City has dared to show ambition, and challenge football's established elite, including Ian Wright's beloved Arsenal. They are indignant that a lovable old punchbag like City has found a big pot of cash, and a brash chief executive who does not know his place - a chief executive who dares to dream of signing Kaka, beating Manchester United and staking a serious claim to the emerging markets of the east.

City does not have too many Cooks.

It just has plenty of jealous outsiders trying to stir the pot.
brilliant read

I wasn't expecting a better answer but I was hoping for one. City's badge has the red rose on until 1997 when we picked up a fake badge which means nothing, our away kit has been red and black more often than any other colour since Malcolm came along and our traditional colour is maroon. As for why Mancunians should support Lancashire. Manchester is still part of the County Palatine of Lancashire, was part of the historic county of Lancashire and the the cotton boom which turned Manchester into an industrial powerhouse and turned it into an important city came about in no small part due to the hundreds of mills in 'mill towns' all around Lancashire and was why Manchester became known as 'Cottonopolis'. Whereas your argument is they shouldn't because they're based in Old Trafford (which, like Manchester, was part of Lancashire). The reason we run the rags down is not because they're from Old Trafford but because they use the name Manchester when they've been based in Old Trafford for most of their history. Manchester has been a part of Lancashire for the vast vast vast majority of its history and is still part of the County Palatine and I believe it is those historic boundaries which are used for cricket.

No, you're being strange as usual. There is no connection between the Lancashire cricket team and the rags other than they have red in common and both play in Old Trafford. I've pointed out why both are invalid reasons, or, if you took them to your logical conclusion you'd be unable to support City who used the red rose whereas the rags didn't.

No I wouldn't. I live in Manchester, my dad's a blue and I was brought up a blue, so I support City-valid reason.

I was born in Surrey, I want to have a connection to my roots and there's no active reason other than location to support another county, so I support Surrey-valid reason.

By others logic nobody could have gone today if they lived outside Manchester as they all have to support their local club, absolute tosh and you know it.

I said in my original point that that's as strange as supporting a team in red from Old Trafford, poking fun at the fact that it's flawed logic.

You think others have the flawed logic here? Can you tell me which county cricket team is more local than Lancashire to Mancunians?
