Gas & Electricity

After my long running dispute with EDF and my smart meter not working they’ve finally admitted the smart system infrastructure is fucked, they’ve said they and their suppliers are looking into a national problem, they’ve given us £50 compensation. i hope they aren’t been subsidised by tax payers money to put these in.

My EDF smart meter worked for around 6 weeks post installation. Gas reading then fell out for about 4 weeks and then both readings went.

It hasn’t read anything for about 4 months now and I can’t even be arsed to ring them as it’s no doubt my fault and I need to switch it off and back on again etc etc.

It simply isn’t fit for purpose and I’m fucked if I’m reading their meters for them, they can send someone out!

Well we've gone from being a little in debt to having our energy bills cut. We're not letting them beat us the profiteering twats.

We haven't used the oven for months (air fry or make stews), heating stays off unless we treat ourselves, all lights now led bulbs.

And i can't see us going back to wasting that much energy (for their profit) in future. Its probably a way of life change for all of us.

Just done my readings, exactly 2 months apart (12/12/22 - 12/02/23).

I've used:

Gas - 161m3
Electric - 471kwh

I currently pay £185pm direct debit and pay back the £60 British gas pays me from the government grant.

Rough calculations based on formulas I've googled says I should have built up a bit of credit? I'm hoping that's correct cos I've been worried I'll end up owing a load!!
Update on the above:

I've just had an email from British Gas recommending that I reduce my direct debit to £150pm.

I'm using around £85 a week ...fuck me this house must be very leaky as I've cut back too from last year.
To be fair mate, my house is drafty as fuck and could do with new seals round the windows and doors etc.

We have the heating on for 2-3 hrs in the evenings, most evenings, and leave the smart thermostat at around 12° overnight so it doesn't really kick in. Got a boiler that's only 12 months old so I'd imagine that will be helping?

Wife works from home so there's always someone in the house using electric. 2 young kids mean there's always a couple of TV's on or a phone on charge.

I must admit I'm quite surprised, but glad coz I'd be struggling to afford any more.

Energy price cap reduced to £3280 from April 1st but bills still expected to rise due to the government help ending.

a lot of people will be shafted when the £67 stops getting paid,me included,i know its not a lot but it makes a difference, i asume it will be a gradual reduction on the price caps now when reviewed and all being well back to somewhere like normal ready for next winter

The suspicious would say in time for next election

Thought targeted help was continuing after april but martin lewis says no today also he has led a campaign for the gov to not let the april rise go ahead , said it is a political decision and not the energy companies putting up bills themselves , for the sake of the three months he think it will be it is not worth the gov making people suffer , says he feels like the rise will not happen but he doesnt know it

It won’t be back to ‘normal’ until 2026, looking at the futures markets for Gas. But it will be back to more reasonable levels by the end of the year.

Personally I don’t think we will ever get back to combined gas and electric being around £1200 per annum for the average consumer.
