Gas & Electricity

Congratulations to everyone who overpriced their houses in the last 22 years. Why did people stop looking at what would happen to their mortgages if interest rates rose.

Interest rates always rise eventually.

Of course the BTL market will mean higher rent now as lots of properties on interest only mortgages. What a mess.
It's a bloody nightmare

They tell you when you take out a mortage (or did for me at least) what your payments will be if interest rates rise to X Y & Z, the information is there in front of people to use
Same with everything, some people don't think long term and bury their head in the sand, thinking nothing will change. Some want the biggest, shiniest things they can have without thinking of the consequences. Why do you need a 60 grand 4 wheeler to take the kids to school? Lot of people in for a big reality check.

My electricity useage has gone down a lot since we bought an Air Fryer. With 5 people in the house (including 3 teenagers) all in and out at different times, the oven was always on/off/on/off for people heating up or cooking a small amount of food. Now they all use the Air Fryer which saves a fortune, got ours from Costco for £55.

As the cost of living is going through the roof I don't see how raising interest rates will help as very few people have disposable incomes anyway anymore. All is it does is add to the misery

The worst hit will have to decide if they eat or stay warm which is horrific.

The government are short sighted with the whole thing. Even those who are better off will be making sacrifices. I wonder if people start to eat and drink at home to off set costs which will impact the leisure industry. That said, enjoying drinks in a warm pub might be cheaper than staying at home with the heating on. I imagine holidays might be sacrificed as well.
We'll all be like my Grandad and his mates used to be in the Railway Inn in Cadishead. Go there at 6 and stay until 9 sipping two pints of Mild then home to bed !

On top of the rising prices of all necessities my missus has just been made redundant. Been there less than a year so we'll get fuckall so household income 38k a year down as we speak.

She'll get something I'm sure but a pay decrease is likely.

General rises for the necessities had us knocking many away games on the head this season plus stopping going in our local on a Friday night to cover the increased costs but her losing her job will probably impact on our savings/ how much we can overpay on our mortgage which is irritating.

Strange and challenging times we're living in.

Reigns in spending, encouraging saving, which stops companies increasing prices. That’s the theory anyway.

Good luck mate.

Looking at one of these what exactly can you use them for?

Another good tip i heard yesterday (i assume im the only one who listened to the discussion on air source heat pumps on R4):

Turn down the heat on your boiler out put. Most people just have it cranked which heats the house faster but once at temperature it makes no difference and just means you boiler is operating in its least efficient mode. Like driving everywhere in 3rd gear.

So turn it down close to minimum, it will take longer to heat up so change the timer. You can save between 5 and 10% by doing this.
