you are missing the point that Johnson could move the date of the election once set...and none of the opposition ranged against him trust him not to.....
There will be an election but only after no deal Brexit is off the table and put to bed. November would be my guess.
Nov 1 I'd wager...

No, I am not missing that point.

It is perfectly possible to set the election date in law such that it cannot be changed. The Labour excuse is just an excuse.

if it isn't called in November, I will be the first to apologise and say you were correct.

This sums up where we are rather well.....

https://www.theguardian.com/politic...ections-but-no-elections-what-next-for-brexit

The three main points are....

Does that mean Brexit will not happen on 31 October?

It would seem not. The rebel bill, due to get royal assent on Monday, dictates that if by 19 October the government has neither passed a new deal or received MPs’ consent for no deal, it must seek an extension to 31 January (longer if required by the EU and agreed by parliament). This will be the law.

Will Johnson extend Brexit?
The prime minister insists not, saying candidly that he would rather be “dead in a ditch” than do so. However, he has also said he would follow the law. There is, obviously, a contradiction in this, and the way out remains unclear. One theory would involve Johnson resigning – No 10 has not explicitly ruled this out – and allowing opposition parties to try, and potentially struggle, to form a temporary government before an election. More unlikely proposals include someone other than Johnson being sent to Brussels to agree to the extension, with options including the Speaker, John Bercow, or even the Queen.

What is Downing Street’s plan?
For now, it seems to be the venerable political tradition of ploughing on day by day in the hope something turns up. Publicly, officials will not look beyond Monday’s second attempt to spark an election, and the associated media blitz aimed at labelling Jeremy Corbyn a coward, complete with mocked-up chicken pictures. It is entirely plausible that they still do not know quite what to do if compelled to seek a new Brexit deadline.

Dead in a ditch, appears the best solution & probably the most popular.

All seems fair enough to me.

Labour obviously don't want an election for fear of losing it. All this talk of wanting Oct 31 out of the way is bollocks, they could easily require the election date to be set in law. No-one is buying any other excuse other than "we're scared we'd lose".

If what Labour was offering the public made such good sense and if the public genuinely don't want to the leave the EU, or want a second referendum on it, then Labour would win a GE and that would be the end of it. That they won't agree to one, speaks volumes indeed.

Not only does it speak of their cowardice, it also tells you they are not interested in democracy. They are not interested in what the people might want. The people have said they want to leave. We've agreed to leave on October 31st. Labour are seeking to deny not only that, but also for the people to even be able to vote on it again.

Come on Chippy your better than that Labour don't want an election before 31st October

1. Johnson is a liar and they don't trust him not to try it on so we can crash out
2. Because after the 31st Ocober Boris is toast

But Johnson realizes that one of the few cards he has to play, is to refuse to do as Parliament instructs, and then daring them to bring him down and place Corbyn at the head of an interim government.

Even Johnson isn't stupid enough to play that card it has royal assent. It would like going over Buckingham Palace to accept a gonk getting pissed and urinating in the plant plot laughing whilst everyone watched.

I mean it’s totally obvious to all involved and the Tories are unhappy because their plan, that Cummings cooked up, is failing.
