General Videogame Thread

It says no input signal on TV.
It could possibly be the HDMI cable. Does the system still load a game (obvs you can't see it) but does it sound as though it's loading the game?

If you have a spare HDMI cable to test it and you're still getting the 'no signal' message, that indicates a faulty hard drive issue i'm afraid, so fingers crossed it's not.

Thanks for the response. I tried with a different HDMI cable and it still doesn't work. I think it's a hard drive issue too. It sucks. Would you recommend PS5 or Series X?

Have you tried a hard reset, just to ensure that it's a software issue not a hardware one? That'd be your last resort besides a repair. :(

As for the other question, I really don't know. I've been PS, PS2, PS3 and PS4, but £450 is a bit too steep for me right now, but one of the incidents which has swayed me is Microsofts acquisition of Zenimax/Bethesda.

They've (in the past) released many of my favourite game titles, and I look forward to ES6, Starfield and the potential for new Fallout games, my favourite series of all. If Microsoft have these series as Xbox exclusives only, i'll have to consider a Series X, if Bethesda are allowed to release on multiple formats, albeit on a timed release, i'll still plump for a PS5 as they too have other game series I am quite fond of.

So for me it's about the Bethesda scenario now.

Now about 16 hours into the FF VII remake and I'll be selling this game as soon as I've completed it.

The story, the character, the steampunk style of the world, all great. The battle system, awful. The levels and maps, far too linear, the puzzles hardly worth mentioning. The overall experience, disappointed. They've butchered a classic.

You can use any tactic you like to beat normal enemies, then you get to a boss and it's totally unbalanced, only specific attacks or magic do any damage. Otherwise there is no incentive to use different attacks.

It comes in at around 100GB to install, comes on 2 blu ray discs, yet I'm left nearly at the end feeling like I've not experienced a game.

Stretching this out over 2 or 3 remake installments was the wrong thing to do and I am not sure I'll bother with the others now.

I'm out too now for FF XVI. Been a long time coming, but with the FF franchise, I'm out.

XII I didn't play for years because it abandoned turn based and that was my thing at the time, but I came back to it later and can appreciate it as a very good game.

XIII and XIII-2 I actually enjoyed the story somewhat and the battle system gave some control, even if the game itself was too linear. I gave up though by lightning returns.

XV was a mess, the battle system left me feeling like I wasn't actually pressing any buttons or influencing the combat. The ending had to be totally rewritten too because it was so poorly received.

But VII remake is the final straw. It's almost just XV with a new dress on.

After pretty much deciding to wait it out and see what happens in a year or two, I have suddenly got tempted to buy a Series S just to tide me over for a year or two. I've worked a ton of extra hours due to COVID so could be tempted to treat myself.

Am I right in thinking all games work for it, but the loading times might be slightly less instantaneous and the graphics might be slightly less perfect? As that wouldn't bother me at all (not planning on buying a new TV so the graphics would always be less perfect than they might anyway), neither would no discs as I never get round to selling games anyway.

£250 doesn't seem very much for a couple of years of gaming while I see where the chips land

Yeah I am in a dilemma too. I have been Xbox so far but I want to switch to PS5. But after Microsoft's acquisition of Zenmax studio, I honestly don't know now. But my current Xbox is done sadly. Won't bother spending on a used on. Rather wait till November.

Yep a little bit slower and not full 4k, it does seem a bit of a bargain, however imho if you are going next gen you go X or PS5

Long term yes, but I expect the release consoles to be about as reliable as a Tory MP, so I figure I'll use the nice cheap option as my go to until they release the second or third version of the proper ones, once they've ironed out all the issues that will inevitably occur

Nice idea. The only issue is that in the short term the Xbox barely has any games. Even the Xbox One back catalogue isn't exactly spectacular but might be good enough for a few years if you haven't played the games already.
