Had a few hours on Rocket League as it's become free to play. Actually enjoyed it although the controls are a bit tricky and will take time to get used to.

It's cross play as well and really easy to find a game as there was 1.4M players online at 8pm!

After pretty much deciding to wait it out and see what happens in a year or two, I have suddenly got tempted to buy a Series S just to tide me over for a year or two. I've worked a ton of extra hours due to COVID so could be tempted to treat myself.

Am I right in thinking all games work for it, but the loading times might be slightly less instantaneous and the graphics might be slightly less perfect? As that wouldn't bother me at all (not planning on buying a new TV so the graphics would always be less perfect than they might anyway), neither would no discs as I never get round to selling games anyway.

£250 doesn't seem very much for a couple of years of gaming while I see where the chips land

One thing to seriously consider is memory mate. Microsoft have been very shrewd here. The series S only has 512gb and an expandable SSD is £220 to bump the storage up to an extra 1TB. That makes it £470. The X-Box Series X has 1TB and costs £450 and has a disk drive and better overall specs. With some games now using over 100gb in storage that will only go higher with graphics etc and 512gb is gone pretty quick. You could buy a current gen X-Box One X that runs 4k and has a higher performance than a normal X-Box One and has 1TB storage and just buy games you get a free upgrade to next gen with or just buy a Series X. At one stage I was in the top 3% on that game, it's mechanical as fuck though.

Just had 4 hours on Mafia Remastered on the PS4 pro. Decent game so far, the story is interesting. Just had a good mission with having to take part in a motor race. It does fall short of red dead and GTA in terms of them bringing the game world to life, there’s not much variety so far aside from in mission.

I don't need 1TB of storage though, I pretty much only play one or two games at a time, I've never even got near the cap on my day 1 Xbox One or my bog standard PS4. I am one of those crazy people who likes everything tidy, so the second I finish a game and don't intend to play it any time soon, I delete it, then if I later decide I want to play it again I just install it again, no big deal.

And a current gen Xbox One X is surely pretty pointless as it won't run the next gen games? My aim isn't getting the prettiest looking Xbox One games I can, it's having the next gen games available to me if I want them. I frankly don't particularly care about graphics, no game has ever been good because of graphics, it's gameplay that makes a game enjoyable. (something a lot of devs seem to have forgotten sadly)

Tbh, I am pretty much only going to use it to play MLB the Show, since that's gone multiplatform, along with free stuff on Games Pass. If something exciting turns up that I want a PS5 or Series X for, I'll just buy one.

I don't know that mate. 512gb is not a lot of memory and it goes pretty quick. Was just trying to gives some helpful advice. The reason why I suggested an X-Box One X was because of above reasons and the lack of games that will be available at launch and for maybe a year. If there is a game you want then thats different.

No worries, didn't mean it to come off badly if it did. Just for the way I use my console, don't think the x is necessary just yet. Something cheap and cheerful to get me access to the next gen games when they arrive will do for now, then commit to either proper ps5 or series x once it's clearer who has won this gen

No worries mate. That seems fair and a good investment then. There are always teething issues too as you say. Red ring of death etc.
