General Videogame Thread

Does anybody on here play their console on a monitor and if so, do you have any recommendations? Considering using one for my PS4 (hopefully PS5 at some point next year).

I usually play on my 4k TV in the lounge but thinking of setting something up in the spare room for when the war office is watching TV.
The ps5 will not be supporting 1440 at launch.
So It will either show as 1080 or it will output at 4k but then be downscaled and then upscaled to fit the screen. Not ideal.

They have said this might change with an update in the future.

Budget? Almost anything will work fine for a console tbh as using a controller you're not going notice/need/want 144hz+. Not sure what res the new consoles will do? But I frequently ran my PS4 on a 27" 2560 x 1440 LG and it was great. The 32" VA monitors are really impressive for gaming too.
A console player will notice the difference between 30hz and 120hz.

Anyone who says you won't notice the difference with 144hz has never experienced it, once you have you can never go back.

Now both go back and read what I said ;) I have a 165hz monitor, but for PC gaming. 30hz isn't relevant as the minimum he'll be buying is 60hz. Will it be worth going 144hz for a console if you're using a controller? No. Sticks only move your screen so fast. I know this because I also have an xbox controller plugged into my PC, running at 165hz ;)

9 years ago today Skyrim released, how the hell is that 9 years?? Absolutely loved that game I really did, but for some reason never got into ESO. Anyone played ESO much? Hopefully with the new generation of consoles we get next version of elder scrolls and it isn’t restricted to MS.

I gave ESO a second go at the start of lockdown - it's certainly better than it was at launch but I get the impression you may have to end up investing some money to really get anywhere.

I don’t really understand what you’re getting at to be honest. Take Cold War for an example. Its going to be playable at 120fps for console players, you’re telling me that players won’t be able to tell the difference between 30/60 FPS than 120 just because they’re using a control?

We're at he said she said here.. Perhaps I'm being unfair on @Northernstorirs , but I will gladly contest that a bloke looking for a second backup setup for his console, when he can't use his 4K TV in the lounge, is not going to notice the difference between 60hz and 120hz, if and when those titles become available on a console he doesn't even own yet.

Dell D2721H 27 inch Full HD (1920x1080) Monitor, 60Hz, IPS, 5ms, Three-Sided Narrow Bezel

Something like that would be fine @Northernstorirs - Save the difference and put it towards the PS5 or just more games. If you can stretch another £20 from your budget and think you would notice the difference,

ViewSonic XG2705 27-inch Full HD IPS Gaming Monitor with AMD FreeSync, 2x HDMI, 144Hz

you could look at something like that. Would also be better if you had any designs of taking up PC gaming. Ideally you wouldn't run 1920x1080 on a 27" but again, I'm making some assumptions about what you're likely to notice/care about, and what resolution the console will even output. It's absolutely fine in a pinch for when the missus nicks the TV.

Edit: Links don't seem happy with me. Fixed.

Lucky bugger!! My post came at 7.15 that's what's prompted me to call Argos. Got the new Destiny 2 expansion and Jedi Fallen Order to play later so not too annoyed.

Played grounded last night which is series x enchaned and it looks stunning in 4K HDR

Will check grounded out mate. I held off playing Gears 5 so started on that. It looks stunning in 4k. Have the game pass but have already done most of the EA play games already. Fallen order was very good.

Still play it, added loads of mods, new villages, quests, npc's etc etc. Great game and still finding new stuff.

Fuck all your games, this is the only game currently on the market as far as I am concerned. My first day at work started with me smashing an alarm clock, before smashing the coffee table, and randomly beating the hell out of some oil drums because they sounded nice. Then I snuck into a crooked business, broke some windows, stole their computers. Jumped out of my skin when I triggered an alarm, lept out of the second floor window and made my escape... nearly. I was feeling pretty clever for commandeering a small boat to avoid having to destroy the hefty permiter fence, but didn't bother mooring it facing the right way for a quick escape. Reversed out, tried to do a handbrake turn to save time... you can't do a handbrake turn in a boat, it turns out. The front end of the boat goat smashed up and it started to sink agonisingly slowly... until I applied the throttle and vast amounts of water came in over the smashed bow. Swam for it but the helicopter had already found my van.

Cheers pal, appreciate the advice. These looks like good options and I shall look in to both.
