George Galloway | Wins Rochdale Bi-Election (p4)

Seriously? He called Israel an 'entity' as an insult with associated venom. So, yes, calling Israel an 'entity' might be technically correct but so would calling Palestinians 'carbon based life forms'. Both are insults and are taken as insults.

As an aside,

Is the view that Israel should not exist widely held?
Then if the guy you quoted thinks entity is an insult, he needs to purchase a dictionary.

It is widely held by many, mostly people who disagree with the creation and displacement of the Palestinians. This is more to do with ethnic cleansing, and colonial planting. Not anti Jewish. They think it isn’t acceptable to just claim someone else’s territory, because a man made book says so. The depth of animosity is deepened by how the Israelis treat the Palestinians. Which is utterly appalling. They have killed tens of thousands of them. That shouid anger everyone, but again, horror and indignation seem to be selective. There was a justified outpouring of horror in the October attack, yet a significant number within that outraged demographic, watch 30,000 men women and children killed. Children starving, stampedes for food, killing over a hundred and don’t say a fucking word. That to me is endowing more worth to an innocent Israeli child over a Palestinian one. But the west have demonised the victims of losing their country and elevated those who took it, as the wounded party, that shouldn’t wash with anybody, but, it clearly does.

There is the other group who actually hate Jews and are anti semetic. Mostly Islamist Jihadust groups, or Nazi’s. Because the far right hate Islam so much, they now support the Jews. Which is laughable.

The US is the greatest supporter and ironically one of the lmost anti semetic countries on the planet. They don’t support Israel because they love Jews, it’s a defended access point to the oil fields in any war. The oil runs out, so does the dollar.

For the record, I don’t want Israel to be destroyed. I want them to realise that if you keep kicking a dig, don’t he sulurorused if it bites you. Remove fanatics who exasperate the situation by trying to find a just solutions that prevents atrocities on innocent people on each side and war happening. Won’t he easy, but it must be worth trying. The current strategy I would argue, plays into the hawks hands. That has never ended well, ever.

Rochdale is no worse than other areas in Greater Manchester and other big city areas. It’s no better either. It’s like the curate’s egg.
I’ve worked in schools right across the LA from Norden & Littleborough to Langley & Alkrington and was always made very welcome by staff, pupils and parents. I realise that at the moment after the bye-election result feelings are running high but I just can’t ignore the condemnation of a whole town (which should IMHO be a city) on a result that will probably be overturned in a couple of months *fingers crossed*
Sorry to butt into your discussion. :-) :-)

The usual pedantic correction....

The curate's egg was entirely off....

Right Reverend Host: "I'm afraid you've got a bad Egg, Mr Jones!"
The Curate: "Oh no, my Lord, I assure you! Parts of it are excellent!"

A "curate's egg" is something described as partly bad and partly good. In its original usage, it referred to something that is obviously and entirely bad, but is described out of politeness as nonetheless having good features that redeem it.[1][2] This meaning has been largely supplanted by its less ironic modern usage, which refers to something that is in fact an indeterminate mix of good and bad,[3][4] possibly with a preponderance of bad qualities.[5]

So I guess we can look at it two ways? :-)

I think it's a shame that dictionaries etc have mildly accepted its misuse (as just meaning the same as a "mixed bag"). Now if Brewster's Millions said the Tory Party was like the curate's egg, that would be an apposite use.

Punch's last edition made it very much in tune with 20th century frankness:

Thanks for the response must have taken some time and points well made. My counterpoints would be,

Paragraph 2: Taking land from others has been going on since the start of time surely? Land is usually what most wars are fought over. How far back in time do we go to find the true owners of any piece of land? There must come a point in time where a compromise is made and you accept the right of the new occupants/immigrants to live there.
On mourning and anger at deaths, all deaths. I'm not going to lie I do not know anyone directly involved in the conflict and I do not lose any sleep over any of the deaths, Israeli or Palestinian. There are nearly 170,000 deaths in the world everyday and I hope every single one of them has lived to a ripe old age and had a great time but unless know them personally then I do not mourn. (Before you call me a monster I don't know anyone who goes to funerals of people they do not know). Anger is slightly different as I think everyone gets angry at deaths they consider unjust but realistically you cannot have war where only guilty people get killed. It's war, people die, if you do not want war then make a lasting compromise.

Paragraph 3: Not sure of this at all. There are certainly far right groups who hate the Jews and far left groups who hate the Jews. Strange bedfellows but ultimately their hate unites them.

Paragraph 4: Just seems a diatribe against the USA. Perhaps a debate for another day.

Paragraph 5: Is the billion dollar question. What is the solution? For me, and I think millions of others, the Palestinians/Hamas and their supporters have to accept that Israel (and their nuclear weapons) are going nowhere. The original, UN imposed borders, need to be respected and both sides need to accept that. Bottom line, and I know it is hard to take, but militarily the Palestinians have been absolutely routed and they need to look to the future not the past and negotiate.
