Gerard Wiekens

Title: Kicking & Screaming!

As in Joe Royle said Andy Morrison dragged us out of that division "kicking & screaming". I know that the book is about the whole squad, but big Andy was the captain & catalyst that season.Anyhoo just a suggestion.

Technically, looking at that picture, you could have got a little closer!!

Great story and look forward to your publication. My title suggestion is ...

High Five

.. relating to the number of minutes added, which seemed ridiculous in those days, but gave us all the hope to find the equaliser.

Always liked GW because his name is similar to mine and when we sang "there's only one Gerard Wiekens" I used to sing my own name. He had a dog called Joey.

Remember after we played Charlton away a lad at work who lived in South London brought in his local paper that described City as "A pub team with attitude" which I thought was taking the piss at the time but was probably about right.

Remember him starting that derby towards the end of his time with us, thought we were going to get thumped anyway and then heard we had both first choice center backs out. And in true City traditional up steps Wiekens to play 90 mins that would have rivaled any Maldini, Baresi or Thiago Silva performance. We may have been little City but we had big heart.

Suggestion for the title: The Sleeping Giant Stirs: Man City reborn.

I remember seeing him at Burnley in a friendly in August 1997 for the first time and then he was picked as the holding man of a quality (!) midfield quarter of Horlock, W, Kinky and Brannan (lots of width there!) Think he did OK in there and scored an odd goal too - including on his debut vs Portsmouth (stuffiest day I can ever remember - stifling!) Think he played midfield a lot of that season and am not sure when he got converted to a centre-back by Joe Royle. He did well alongside Mozza in DIv 3 - although there were a few balls-ups in the big games - wasn't it him vs Wigan away in the semi? And I seem to remember some sort of cock up at Preston also. He did well alongside Jobbo in Div 2 (amazingly so) but then when we bought Prior to stiffen us up for the push for promotion I think he did a real shift in midfield - I remember beating Bolton 2-0 and he had a great game there. Not sure he did much in our prem season under Royle - although I do remember a Boro lad getting sent off for a terrible tackle on him up there in the Tiatto-mystery-dissallowed goal game. He seemed to play reasonably often under KK in Dviv 1 but then the side moved on.

Haha, I made it look like that, but we actually couldn't. I put my hands through the railings, which were bolted shut, holding my camera inside. ;)
