Get this site sorted

Apart from some bits and bobs to do this week, I'm back on full-time now.

I'll be working to find the causes of the problems that have been affecting us recently.

I'll do a proper post on them when I get chance. Be aware that I'll be working entirely on the server tonight, so it may go slow with only a small amount of users online.

Your a star mate, how do you find time to sleep!?

I mentioned to cleavers earlier tonight that prehaps a sticky in the tech section that explains (in Lehmans terms ;) ) what the problems are, how you're going about fixing them etc might be a decent idea, perhaps with updates along the way.

A lot of us have no clue about the technical side of the forum, i think thats why these threads pop up; if people don't understand the nature of the problem, then its hard to grasp how big the issues are and how complex they are to resolve.

I don't sleep. ;)

Ok mate, I'll have a word with Ric about it. Security wise, I'm not mad about it, but I'm sure we can use general;ities enough to explain the problems.

Posters are offering to help financially if it means they have a relaible service and mods are telling them to mind thier own business and find a new forum if they don't like it.

Either sort it out so we don't have to complain or let us know why its shit.

1. Re your fits paragraph, I never said anything of the sort.

2. We've told you what the problems are/have been.

3. Adverts pay towards the running cost, not in total for it.

I get annoyed when people who don't know anything, come on putting demands in the subject title like the OP did, there's no problem at all with debating it, or even asking nicely whats wrong, but Ric has a young family to look after, and all the rest of us surprisingly have lives and jobs, away from Bluemoon, to get on with (I'm currently at mine, and moderating on here as well).

I happen to know that going from what we have here now, to the "next level" is a very large jump in cost, and as I said above Ric has stated a number of times he doesn't want to charge, he didn't want to have adverts either, but the last upgrade he made required it, and adverts are minimal if you log in.

In fact if people logged in rather than viewed as guests it might actually help with the issues.

Make it a forum that you have to log in to then?

Tried to post this on the other thread about technical issues (but it is now locked).

I was online at about 11am, and was attacked by a Trojan Horse from this site...didn't want to start another thread but couldn't see it mentioned anywhere.

Anyways, keep up the good work guys!

Cheers, CTID

did you check the locked "unsafe site warning" thread mate.....the attack was caused by one of the advertisers running a dodgy script on their advertisement....it wasn't a trojan mate, it simply had similar scripts to a trojan and therefore it was flagged

Some people like to view at work but are prohibited from logging on.

I can not believe how damn right rude and ungrateful some people are,Weve got the best City forum on the internet and because of a few technical problems, which have been explained in previous threads, people think it gives them the right to be damn right bloody rude.

It seems to me that it don't matter what the team who run this site do,it's never good enough.I think one or two of you should grow up and stop behaving like spoilt brats, because things aren't going your way.

I agree about the no need for rudeness part. But everything else, I disagree with.

Being a sad git, I visit lots of forums on lots of subjects. All of these forums are free, many of them have thousands of members and high transaction rates and NONE of them experience the endless problems we have on here.

It's also not right to gloss over the issues as "as few technical problems". That implies it basically works, give or take.

Well it doesn't. You can pretty much GUARANTEE than on Wednesday we won't be able to access the forum because it will be falling over constantly. That isn't a "little technical problem", it's a complete show stopper. Again.

Personally, I would support whatever solution Ric and his colleagues wish to adopt. If we have to be offline for a week whilst the whole platform is upgraded then OK, lets do it. If we have to pay £10 per year if we want to post (or whatever) then yes, OK.

But the status quo is not working and it must be fixed.

It'a already been explained several times why it's running slow. The software isn't designed for this many users, and keeps crashing.

To put it into simple terms, it's like trying to use a Smart Car as a bus.

Damocles is trying to find creative solutions, but it's tricky without changing the software. WHich is something that they are trying to avoid.

Sorry, but that's just not true. PhpBB is more than capable of having an infinite amout of users.....if you're having problems then it's down to your back-end SQL/MySQL database. Either the webhost can't handle the amount of database requests or they have an imposed limit. I have been on forums that have over 1 million members, obviously not online all at once, but they still run fine.

I stand in awe at some of the technical wizards on here who can understand scripts, software, programming, servers, how the brain works...

Stuff like this never existed when I was a teenage fan - we remember when half-time scores used to be put up manually on a giant scoreboard in the open end - but my admiration for all today's computer whizz kids knows no ends.

Sure, its frustrating when things go slow, but this is a free site and we need to remember that. I'm just glad to be part of the community here...
