Ahhhh...just watched the highlights posted on the City website.... what a day!
I'd not long before moved to the North East for a job, so travelled down to London on the train on my own to meet my sister (for the second time, as we'd strangely chosen the Gillingham away game as our "long haul" weekend away that season, so had had a weekend in Margate just a few weeks earlier!).
The fun started when I reached King's Cross, where there were suddenly dozens of City fans, so after a beer or two, I went with them to Wembley and met up there with my sister and mates.
Despite the feelings of complete and utter despair after 86 minutes, I couldn't believe how many people left the ground at 2-0 down. It almost felt like I had to stay to see the very last moments of City's demise.... I can remember sitting with my head in my hands nearly in tears....and even at 2-1 telling anyone who would listen that there was still no chance, don't get your hopes up, what a load of shite, etc. etc. And then getting buried under a pile of ecstatic people! I remember extra time was excruciating and that we'd still throw it away, but once we reached penalties my faith returned.... I just felt Weaver would be our final hero of the day!
After we'd won, I made my way down to the front corner of the stand, right at the player's exit tunnel, with my sister's camera.... only to realise she was on shot 23 of the film (remember those days?!). SO I waited and waited as player after player came past celebrating right in front of me, as I wanted the perfect shot of the "winner's" trophy. I think it was Andy Morrison who was carrying the cup as the players finally left the pitch, and he was right there in front of me as I took the photo...only for some git to jump on me just as I pressed the shutter button, and all I got was a photo of the floor! (Oh, and it turned out to be a 36 exposure film....!)
Ahhh...what a day!
