Given issues ultimatum to Mancini

If he wants to go on loan I don't blame him, you're not going to keep both keepers happy, not a chance and there's no point in deluding ourselvses. One will be gone come the January market.
Given wont want to sit on the bench because purely he's only a handful of years left and he shouldn't be blamed for wanting game time.
Hart should have patience to sit on the bench, he's only 23 which is incredibly young especially for a keeper, but he's spat out his dummy enough times in the pre season interviews that we know he wont stay, he thinks he better than he is, and has moaned to the media countless times.

Given's a very popular player in the dressing room and I can't see many being pleased with him being moved. Not to mention he's vice captain.

Ya..no quotes. I wont hold my breath. There are no quotes and Arsenal really..ya I can see that happening.
I mean it's not like RTE to pick up something like this, but I wont hold my breath till I see it for myself and what he actually said. Doesn't seem likely though, especially Arsenal, that's ridiculous.
But Hart is the better keeper and why should he sit on the bench just because he is young. Silly argument.

Hope it's not true, because if he does move on it will be a mistake. We're the only team with 2 great keepers. Mind you, either one of them would walk into the No1 jersey at Arsenal, so I wouldn't really blame them.

Disappointing if true as is Joe's comment if true, we have competition all over the park so these 2 should relish the competition not want to be at a club they are a cert to start

Hart isn't the better keeper, which is why he should wait on the bench, as the younger keeper, and wait for his chance.

-- Mon Aug 09, 2010 3:41 pm --

You think he is a better keeper. I think Given's the better keeper. And it goes on and on. And 23 as a keeper, you're a baby keeper, and nearly every keeper that age is warming the bench for an older keeper, why? Because keepers are at their best in their 30's.

SSN showed it too..tbh honest with shays injury and the possibilty it could re occur i would think that he's the one who we could afford to let go !!

but it will be given that asks for the move so how could anybody be pissed off?

I didn't say they'd be pissed off, I said they wouldn't be happy, nor should we be if you start to loose all the leaders inside a dressing room, Dunne for instance.

That and they mightn't be pleased about Hart throwing a strop, which if he starts, which I don't think he will, it for me, sounds like City were pushed into it, play him or he wont stay. But who knows what goes on in City. That's just how it seems to come across to me.

You really think Shay is a leader?? What next, Stevie Ireland for captain?

I've never seen such a blindly loyal supporter of a national team on a forum such as yourself. You would probably stick Kevin Doyle up front over Carlos. I dont know wether to applaud you or just despair.

Given is not a leader at all, the same as Kolo isn't. Hughes made those decisions and it cost us.

As you can tell, I genuinely couldnt give a toss if Shay stays. Joe should be our number one for the next 15 years. Let him develop and grow with the team. We cant just expect to go to a champions league side, get established, possible league champions and then throw in Hart under intense pressure in 3 years. Saying that, we won't be winning anything with 'six yard shay' in goal.

I'm happy for whoever misses out to go on loan, even to Arsenal.

They both deserve and need to be playing first team football now, it could bite us on the arse but it would be a classy thing to do IMO.

You think it would be the classy thing to do to help Arsenal strengthen in the one position they need to in order to challenge for the title? Jesus wept...

My thought's exactly .

Yes but Given has only been fully fit for a few weeks and even then came on for him in the second half of most games.

And played better than Hart when he came on. They both played an equal amount of time when Given was fit.

not happy>>>>pissed off

I would pick Hart over Given. They are close if not on par ability wise but Hart is a lot younger. With Hart and a back four of Kolarov, Kompany, Micah and Boateng we could have a defense for years to come.

Just saw that on SSN. Can we be clear..... None of our goalkeepers are going anywhere. I don't care what they want, they signed on, they honour their contract and give 100%

Both have obviously read Robinho's book.;

How to act like a spoilt brat in one easy lesson.:)

Loyalty v. self-interest aside, I can't blame either for making the statements they did. Hart is at a crossroads. He has the opportunity to cement himself as England's #1 for years to come but to do so, needs first-team football in the Prem. Given, on the other hand, despite what may be said here, was widely regarded as one of, if not the, top net-minder in the Prem last year before his injury. There would be no reason for him to stick around if only to play second-fiddle to Hart.

When it comes down to it, I think if one has to go, it should be Given due to Hart's up-side and current level of performance, even if it means a slight step down in net from last season.

is the given ultimatum the follow up to the hart ultimatum - or is it the other way round?......which is the prequel, which is the sequel?....who goes, you decide!

Here we go...

Shay Given admits he would be willing to consider a loan move should he start the season on Manchester City's bench.

Blues boss Roberto Mancini faces a selection dilemma heading into the 2010/11 campaign, with Given competing with England hopeful Joe Hart for the No.1 spot.

Both men have strong claims to the role, with Given among the Premier League's most consistent performers and Hart having shone while on loan at Birmingham last season.

There will, however, be one man left disappointed on Saturday when City get their campaign up and running away at Tottenham Hotspur.

Should Given be the man to make way, the Republic of Ireland international has revealed that he would need to weigh up his options before deciding whether to look elsewhere for regular first-team action.

"I think we are both at a stage where we need to be playing football," he said.

"If I don't start then I will sit down with the club next week and see where my future lies, and maybe it will be vice-versa with Joe.

"We both feel that we need to be playing. I'm at a stage where I need to be playing, I'm 34 and I haven't got millions of years left to play football.

"Hopefully I will play on Saturday, but whatever decision the manager makes I will respect that and then sit down with the club next week."

Pressed on whether he may look to secure a permanent move away from Eastlands, Given insisted that he is determined to play a major role in City's ambitious plans for the future.

He added: "Ideally I would like to stay at the club because it's a big club and an ambitious club, with fantastic owners and I want to be part of that, that's why I joined in the first place.

"Possibly, if I didn't start, then there could be a loan and then I'd come back and see where that takes me."

Given is still hoping it will be he who is given the nod by Mancini on Saturday, as he admits that whoever starts at White Hart Lane can rightly consider themselves to be City's first-choice keeper.

"The manager will decide who he wants to start with on Saturday and you would imagine that will be who he wants to play in most of the games this season," he said.

"Joe's a top keeper as well so it's inevitable that there will be speculation about who will start on Saturday, that's part and parcel of being at a big club because there are so many great players there. It's not just my position, there are 10 other positions where people aren't sure who is going to play."

Competition for keepers is different. Whoever wins will have the starting spot all season, barring a freak injury. The other one will basically be "Cudicini'ed", and ride the bench constantly except for few cup games.

Yes he is vice captain. The defenders get to hear him quite regularly too as they often have to defend anything that is hit with two yards of the goal line.

Im not privy to the dressing room so I wouldnt know. However I am English and can confirm that Joe Hart has a shrine built to him in the corner of the dressing room to which the other players all have to bow down to upon entering, such is his popularity.

exactly, no reason for either Given or Hart to be happy with such an arrangement when loyalty to the club could mean deep-sixing either's carrer as a top-flight Prem keeper. Especially Given, he is 34 for cripe's sake.
