Golf Thread

In June and July when we had had the good weather and fast running fairways it wasn't a problem it's just when the ball goes 200 instead of 240 with the run.
Yep, my ball in this weather is not going much past 180 yards but I’m a little older than you and have definitely lost a fair bit of distance.

Do any of you play at a course that don’t use fairway mats , proper greens and well draining??
Me and my mates fancy a trip out over the Xmas period.. I looked at Delamere Forest but it’s £90 even in the winter !
Fairway mats seem to be the norm these days. Have a look at some of the links courses in North Wales.
Delamere charge what they want, definitely a rich man's club. Played it in the Cheshire Championships about 20 years ago, got a practice round in and the first 2 rounds for £20. Missed the cut by 1!

Started at 3.6 ended at 5.5, so a pretty shit year. Been on the slide since the lockdowns. A big problem has been loss of distance, particularly off the tee. I'm 60 now and I'm certain it's physical decline. I've decided to go down the route of speed training, and doing some weights. Made some superspeed sticks, didn't want to pay £200 for the real thing so I made some from old driver shafts, nuts and epoxy. Training schedules are on YouTube. Driver swing speed is currently 90mph and my target is to get near 100 if I can.
Speed training and working out will get you to 100mph no problem. I took the plunge last winter. I went to a sim as i felt slower and my driver was 100 which about 10 years ago was 110 (last time i went to a sim and actually checked it.)

Bought the speed sticks in the boxing day sales, did the protocol religiously and added some golf/explosive specific work outs to my routine. Started in Jan and by march i was swinging 115mph all out!!! I was ecstatic. I'm 52 for reference.

My golf buddies commented immediately at the distance i picked up over them. My cruising speed is now 110 but i still have some in the tank. I stopped speed training when i started playing regularly in the spring. I'll be doing it again in January to see if i can squeeze some more out and I'll make sure to keep doing it regularly all year.

Good luck.

That's great to know that someone has succeeded with them. Had a mate who bought them and got no improvement, got the feeling he didn't try though.
What was your increase over the first 6 week session?

Finishing the year as a 60 yr foc at 8.6 which I’m ok with given the whites at our place have a 73.6 / 142 rating.

I got to 108/109 pretty quick but stayed there for a while, couldnt seem to break 110, then all of a sudden just went to 111 and then 115 in the same session. Didnt look back. This was swinging out of my shoes

Look at what Padraig harrington does before he swings, he takes 2 or 3 mental fast swings, this really helps, you need to swing without the ball, but you get knackered pretty quick

I think its important to marry the speed swings with actual gym work. You need to work out to get the full benefit.

Padraig has great swing speed for a seniors tour age. Watched him on YouTube and I think superspeed sponsor him.
I think as amateurs we're too worried about position off the tee whereas the pros just want to get the ball as close to the green as possible.

Regarding my handicap increase over the season it didn't help that the greens were absolutely dog shit due to an incompetent greenkeeper and non existent greens committee. We are now using temporary greens in October which hasn't happened in my time at the club which I joined over 40 years ago.
That’s a shame, I always liked Romiley it’s a great track. Come to Prestbury, the greens will be running true all winter and will only be on temps when it gets icy.

I’ve definitely lost a few yards this year (52 last birthday) so I’ve been working on my short game to try and make up for it (never practiced anything before, just played and been hovering around 6 for years).

My short game is better now but I‘d love to get a few yards back with my driver and see if I can get down to scratch before it’s too late so I’ll try these speed stick things over winter.
