Government force charity upon us

So you're at the asdas check out and the till operator asks, "do you want to donate to charity?"
You say, "No," and a big bell goes off with flashing lights and a big neon arrow pointing at you saying 'MISERABLIST' as you walk out. Everybody loks at you and thinks tight get.

I doubt it will be like that. More just an option on the keypad.

But if it is the system you suggest, I think that would be silly and I would be against it.

And therein lies the dilemma. Although it's not really 'forced', being asked to donate puts pressure on people and they (we) don't like it. Some people will even take real offence.

Not if it is just on a keypad.

that would be the best way but that's a lot of new keypads and they're not cheap. Would probably be better to just give the money to charity.

Not at all mate, its just installing the programme on it, like when you go to a restaurant and it gives you an option to tip from your card if you wish to. Very straight forward.

Isn't this the government passing on their responsibilities for maintaining society on to us after cutting support for social welfare, intl development, education etc.

We pay taxes, a hell of a lot more taxes than other similar countries who are able to fully support a fair working universal welfare system which in turn reduces the need for arbitrary, emotively-driven, individual charity donations to such projects.

Don't the donkey sanctuary receive more money from individual donors than the Nspcc? Something like that. We pay taxes for this shit!!

For what shit?

This has nothing to do with taxes. This is about charitable foundations or do you think they should not exist with the welfare state?

Why try and invoke politics into everything?

You pay taxes and as such feel should should never donate - great, don't.

Some people pay taxes and do wish to give. There is a choice.

But no no, get your knickers in a twist and be arsey about it. It will really affect you.

I never have cash. As soon as I do - it goes. :(

A feeble attempt at papering over the cracks of capitalism.
Typical divide and rule Tory tactics. Switch the onus onto the man in the street, along with the worst effects of the cuts, while the Tory members and donors in the financial and banking sector get off Scot free with causing all this shit in the first place.

There's me invoking politics from a political decision.

No, you're right we're not being forced too atall, i wasnt saying we are going to be.

Im just saying its a stunt to in some way recompense the charities which will almost definitely lose out because of political decisions. There's nothing wrong with giving to charity ofcourse, i'm just wary of the encouragement of a culture/society in which welfare, education etc. is reliant on individual donors. This will not only effect me directly, but will effect lots of people around me. There is already a pretty long-standing taxation and democracy system which is supposed provide for our welfare, the welfare of children, our education, the welfare of our planet, the welfare of the disabled etc. and does universally in other countries. The need for individual donors to such things in a developed country in 2010 is embarrassing.

I don't care about being asked to give to charity. I care about an elected government withdrawing our collective money from things everyone cares about, and spending our money on things noone wants. As if to say, If you care about something don't vote people in to a system which has the power and resources to change it, send £5 off every month and that'll change it
