Greatest Atmosphere ever at Maine Road

The Sunderland match was incredible and the Mackems more than played their part.

When we got into the Kippax, it was so packed we tried to make our way to the area (which was usually empty) adjacent to the Platt Lane stand, only to find it given over to the away fans. We were not the only ones who thought this and so for a spell there were a few frightening crushes as some tried to move to this area of the ground and others wanted to get away from the segregation fence.

I can still hear the roar of the Sunderland fans when they got a corner after their equaliser and the chants of Barcelona and were the Pride of Manchester when it was confirmed we were going to finish 5th.

Great day and fantastic way to finish the season.

It was probably the only game where I felt, scared is probably not the right word, say claustrophobic.

I like you couldn't get to my regular spot which was to the right of the tunnel entrance near the cage where the away fans stood.

I ended up the other side of the Kippax, towards the North Stand, on line with the 18 yard box..

I couldn't put my hands by my side it was that full and at one stage I thought I was going to have a panic attack as I just couldn't move.

Sunderland fans were everywhere..

Their support that day was outstanding..!

Thanks to all of you who responded to my guess work at the 28,000 for the 10-1 game v Huddersfield.WOW less than 20,000.Thankfully I was there that day to witness the 3 hat tricks.Wonder if this counts better than a trip to York ?? ;)
I hope so mate cos i didn’t go york!! ;)

Funny thing was it was one of the biggest attendances around that time. Hudds was midway through a good run prior to that form was poor, the kids were struggling and attendances were a bit lower. Probably a blessing, but that run of form, suggested a promotion push was on the cards. Nixons sending off against Palace put paid to that.
That palace game was some atmosphere as a side note!!

Neeedless to say the club totted the crowd up as 39000, it certainly never felt like that.

I know what you mean, my friend went a ghostly white as were being knocked about 10 minutes before kick off.

Yeah i can still remember the roar of the Mackems in Platt Lane as they quickly counter attacked towards the away fans and scored a stunning goal marco gabbiadinni heading in a left wing cross...they had the whole of the platt lane end and a portion of the kippax, and the noise was incredible..
Liverpool at home under Kendall, mid week night match, 2-1 City ,two goals by David White, the kippax was in full voice all game...steve mcmanamans full debut for liverpool ,playing up front and scoring with a diving header...that was a match and a half.
The Maine rd massacre has to be my fav atmosphere tho...A fantastic day from start to finish for all Blues.

Many people have highlighted the Charlton promotion match as the best atmosphere..i wasnt there that day ,and hearing some of the accounts of how bad the crush was on the kippax, maybe that was no bad thing....that day is always tinged with sadness for me as it of course was the same day many died at Bradford City...strangely enough my first trip to valley parade after the disaster ,was another Blues promotion day 3 years later and i did have a more than a few thougjts for those that perished as i looked at the temporary stand.....Jubilation and Sadness .

Bit younger than some posting but stand out games included most Manchester derbies, in particular the 1-1 or 0-0 circa 92/93 when the big city flag was passed over the Kippax.

Spurs in the Cup was great especially the 5/10 minutes after Sheron had opened the scoring.

When it became all seater Stoke (with the second half comeback) 98/99, Wigan play offs 98/99, Newcastle in the carabao cup 94/95? when Rosler equalised and Boro in the Fa cup (Juninho v Kinkladze) 96/97.

One last one and worth watching is City v West Ham in the Fa Cup when Kinkladze scored that memorable goal.

When kinky started that run the front of the North Stand literally jumped out of their seats as he slalomed his way to goal. Would love to see that excitement again.

Lovely stuff! Great memories.

Yes mate the Liverpool match was fantastic. Keith Curle was making his home debut and the following week we went top after Andy Hill scored a late header against Notts Forest. Peter Reid was the manager for this one.

Will never forget Whites second as it hit the bar, bounced down with the ref taking an age to finally give the goal at the North stand end. Stood on the Kippax it was only the cheers of the North stand and then White wheeling away with his arm aloft what told us it gad been given.

For the last 20 minutes they absolutely battered us with Mike Marsh?? running the show in central midfield. It was a massive scalp for us at the time.

Apparently I was at Charlton but too young to actually remember it, similarly at that age the tragedy at Valley Parade. Hillsborough I do remember and just glad safety and the way fans are treated has vastly improved since those dark days.

I've not read the full thread so some of these may have been mentioned:

Newcastle 4-0 when Colin Bell came on as a sub for the second half.
Milan 3-0 in the UEFA Cup
Boro 4-0 League Cup semi-final
Rags 4-0 in the League Cup. And before any smart-arse gets all shirty, we didn't know how bad the injury was.
Charlton 5-1 to clinch promotion
Rags 5-1 soon after we'd been promoted
Rags 3-1 last derby at Maine Road

2nd half v Newcastle Boxing day 77...Colin Bells return after injury...

This for me. I was 15 attending a game with nothing depending on it. Cold , miserable and a forgettable first half. I was lucky as I was stood opposite the Tunnel in The Kippax where the players ran through. I suddenly realised the roar around me that spread across the all four stands, and THE song ' We'lll drink the drink the drink to Colin The King The King The King' - never heard anything like it at 15, an absolutely wonderful, majestic, cacophany fitting for one of our own. At that time our best ever.

The singing lasted for the whole second half all about one man.

We won, somebody scored a hat trick......
