Greatest Atmosphere ever at Maine Road

Thanks to all of you who responded to my guess work at the 28,000 for the 10-1 game v Huddersfield.WOW less than 20,000.Thankfully I was there that day to witness the 3 hat tricks.Wonder if this counts better than a trip to York ?? ;)

A very noisy crowd of just over 47,000 saw us beat the same team on New Year’s Day in 1966. At the time they were our closest rivals - with Coventry City - in the promotion race. We won 2-0, courtesy of goals by City greats Jonny Crossan and Mike Doyle. A very tense but exciting one that was on a frosty January 1st.

Yes mate the Liverpool match was fantastic. Keith Curle was making his home debut and the following week we went top after Andy Hill scored a late header against Notts Forest. Peter Reid was the manager for this one.

Will never forget Whites second as it hit the bar, bounced down with the ref taking an age to finally give the goal at the North stand end. Stood on the Kippax it was only the cheers of the North stand and then White wheeling away with his arm aloft what told us it gad been given.

For the last 20 minutes they absolutely battered us with Mike Marsh?? running the show in central midfield. It was a massive scalp for us at the time.

Apparently I was at Charlton but too young to actually remember it, also the tragedy at Valley Parade. Hillsborough I remember vividly and just glad society has moved on and fans are treated much better.
Yeah Mike Marsh was pretty good that day.didnt saunders miss a pen for them,.
We started that season really well, and Coventry away saw us take aroumd 6000 to highfield rd Coventry ,we used take loads to coventry in those days, they gave us the terrace behind the goal, and seats all down one side,it was mental, and so loud .away days were an experience woth City back in the day...amd when Quinns towering header from Ricky Holdens high cross hit the back of the net we all went crazy, seemingly half the ground celebrating.
Every away day was a party back then.and our opening day win i think helped build the atmosphere for the midweek game against Liverpool.i,m pretty sure that was my first ever mid week top flight night game ,it was a special occasion ,Kippax was raucous.

Yes I remember it well. Travelled with the Duki Supporters club to that one and will take credit for starting my first chant ‘we love you City’ walking away from the ground.

Seemed like the start of a new era that game as we kept a clean sheet away from home, which I dont think we did the previous season.

Another great game and atmosphere at Coventry was winning 3-2 after being 2-0 down to, two Mick Quinn goals.

As you say it was an open terrace, chucked it down all day, (the only respite was a pint in the Mercers Arms) but well worth it when Curle won it for us.

Ricky Holden forgotten about him, thanks for that flash back.

Neeedless to say the club totted the crowd up as 39000, it certainly never felt like that.

I know what you mean, my friend went a ghostly white as were being knocked about 10 minutes before kick off.

There were 39000 stood around me ffs.. Ha!

The turnstiles for that game must have been clicking every other entry..

All that money Swailesy coined in, you'd think he'd have sorted a better syrup out..!

Great times that'll stay with me forever..!

I found myself in the open corner between the North Stand and Kippax, and couldn't move an inch... God knows what it was like in the middle of the Kippax
We were in the North Stand and looking into the Kippax we remarked never having seen it like that for years.Good old Mr Swales and his 48,000 was it ? Add another few thousand on.

I remember that game very well as Jan 1st is my birthday. It was the first and only time I stood next to the Main Road Stand and the old Scoreboard End in that open corner.

I don’t know why it sticks in my mind. The 5-1 loss to Tottenham in the FA cup. Terry Phelan scores one of the best consolation goals you’ll ever see by a City player and then the fans run on to the pitch and the game is halted.

I suppose it was the beginning of the end for City as a force at Maine Road. After that, everything just fell apart.

Ah, memories! That was the corner I used to stand in as a youngster with my dad and uncle. By the time of the said Huddersfield game I was in the Kippax with my teenage mates. God! I’m getting old!

I've not read the full thread so some of these may have been mentioned:

Newcastle 4-0 when Colin Bell came on as a sub for the second half.
Milan 3-0 in the UEFA Cup
Boro 4-0 League Cup semi-final
Rags 4-0 in the League Cup. And before any smart-arse gets all shirty, we didn't know how bad the injury was.
Charlton 5-1 to clinch promotion
Rags 5-1 soon after we'd been promoted
Rags 3-1 last derby at Maine Road
The Milan game is a good shout.
