Greatest Atmosphere ever at Maine Road

Kippax was so packed that day they had to relieve the congestion by allowing more fans into the away area and corner. Look at the difference from first to second halves.

I don’t know why but I’ve never seen this. It’s the full half hour highlights from MOTD from the Charlton game, and really gives a taste of the atmosphere that day. Just listen to the noise. Also noteworthy are a number of songs which have died:

Here we go, here we go, here we go.
Going up, going up..
We shall not be moved
Ciiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiittttttyyyyyyyy (at corners)

etc.

I loved watching this and reminiscing

Up in my loft I’ve got the video of this and the 10-1 beating of Huddersfield recorded, alongside my cousin Peter’s Betamax copy of a well-worn Debbies does Dallas!

Yes a fantastic video. The pitch celebrations were only matched ny those at Blackburn in 2000 and I love the gutteral roar of City! city! on the pitch at the end of the match.

Heard the start of a ‘Hark now hear’ and ‘United here we come’ to add to the other chants.

City are back was the chant of my youth growing up as my childhood memories were most vivid around the 89 season. It was a chant of defiance that we would never be beaten.

I noticed on the espn ticker tape we sold David Phillips not long after tue match to Coventry City. Seems like another astute bit of business by Peter Swales.

Liverpool at home under Kendall, mid week night match, 2-1 City ,two goals by David White, the kippax was in full voice all game...steve mcmanamans full debut .
Yes, amazing atmosphere & one of my first night games as a kid. The was it/wasn't it from White...a kind of proto VAR 30 years before it happened!

Was the first time we'd beat Liverpool since I was 6...and I hated them miles more than United at the time. How things have come full circle!

I'd never watched it either, I was living in Germany then, and we got next to no English football let alone "second division". I'd been over for a few games, but couldn't get back for that one due to work, so went out to watch a Bundesliga game to keep my mind off the game, it didn't work needless to say, the game I was at was a really shit a 0-0 draw.

I left that game early to get back to the car, where I could listen to bbc world service on BFBS radio, but it depended where you were in the country whether you could pick up BFBS. To find out we'd won 5-1 was beyond my wildest dreams, nice to remember it again, I'd even forgotten about it being the same day as the Bradford fire disaster.

I could only get tickets in the away end off a tout. My mate wanted to go to boundary park to do one of his 92 grounds and I couldn’t get a ticket for city so we drove from Staffordshire a week after passing my test. I got lost and ended up at main road haha. Result for me. The atmosphere sounded superb from the away end. I somehow managed not to celebrate and avoided a stabbing I recon

I spotted me and pal sat on the wall at the back of the Kippax corner. Great day that. Slightly spoiled by being forced across the full width of the pitch with my arm twisted up my back by some bully boy policeman. Twat.

Thanks for posting this. Just watched it and it's the first time I've seen that longer version of the highlights. There's an abbreviated version of about ten minutes that's on You Tube which I've watched several times, but it's very enjoyable to see this and take it all in.

That period of about 5 minutes between roughly 55 and 60 minutes is wonderful. We go from 2-0 up, at which point we could still have struggled had they suddenly grabbed a goal from somewhere, to 5-0, at which point it's absolutely done and dusted. The noise for the goals is refulgent and I particularly love the anticipatory cheer ahead of the fourth, when Simmo nips in and takes the ball past the 'keeper, followed by the roar when he slots it into the empty net. You can hear a heady mix of joy and relief from the songs from that part of the match onwards. Great stuff.
