Haaland the superstar

Everyone can have their own varying definition of exactly what defines a “superstar “

But I think one think would be virtually unanimously agreed. That City have never signed anybody who generated as much excitement and anticipation as Haaland, before he even kicked a ball. You only had to see the mad scramble for those silver season tickets for evidence of that.

The closest I can remember was when we signed Trevor Francis. That announcement made one of the “dongs” at the start of News at 10.

But it pales into insignificance compared to this.

I had girls at work who I haven’t heard even mention football in the whole time they’ve work there, asking me what I thought of the signing.
The announcement of the signing of Trevor Francis was magic to my ears. This man had scored a hatrick against City at my 1st ever match back in 1980.A definite superstar, even though only briefly at City.i spoke to a Brum fan few years ago who said he was at the match when a 16 year old Francis bagged 4 goals against Ipswich Town.. as a 16 year old forward ...His goals against Wolverhampton wanderers on boxing day 1982(?) at Maine Road are the standout memory...also his debut at Stoke City where he bagged two goals in a 3-1 win and thousands of Blues poured down the M6 to watch him that day.

I've still got the news cuttings from the Sunday people newspaper of Francis standing in front of the away terrace/ cage..after scoring on his debut, blues going mental in their r adoration.

Even as a teenager from the Midlands..watching from afar.. I knew this was box office stuff..I was so excited that we,d signed Trevor Francis,England international..and was buzzing when he scored two for England in the 'Home international' match ,away against Wales I think...I was really proud when a City player turned out for England, never mind score two goals!!
Happy Days.

I understand what you're saying, but wasn't Francis — his transfer fee and wages — part of what became our financial problems?

We've never had anyone like him. Aguero and co don't come anywhere near close to his profile. He's absolutely the next in line to follow Messi and Ronaldo as the footballer kids pretend to be. Kids will be City fans just because they want to be him. KDB a superstar too, but not to the same level as Haaland, but way more than Aguero/Yaya etc.
Dead right about KDB as well. I was in Greece about a year ago and wondered into a shop selling all sorts of stuff and I looked up and they had 3 footy shirts for sale (only 3): Messi, Ronaldo.... and De Bruyne.

All the noises are Haaland will move on in 2 or 3 seasons. I’m not so sure
When the accountant does his sums they will realise his worth financially to the club.
Demand for tickets is higher than it has ever been.
Shirt sales and sponsorship deals will go to another level
I wouldn’t rule out him getting a salary hike that makes him unreachable for the Spanish clubs.
I can’t see him moving within the prem and he will be too rich for most of the other clubs. Maybe PSG but he will know he is too good for that league.

Haaland 100% is a superstar. Taking away a City bias there are a handful of players you're excited to watch live when they turn up in your stadium - Henry and Messi are the two that immediately spring to my mind although I remember being weirdly excited when Crespo turned up with Chelsea. Haaland has that same aura for me. It's not just footballing ability, otherwise David Silva would be worshipped as a God by everyone, but an audacity and personality thing.

A Haaland tap in at the back post hits different even when the goal is meaningless simply because it's Haaland bagging it. His physical size and sprint speed means he grabs your attention wherever he is on the pitch and unlike any of the other recent City superstars he really wants to engage the crowd

No one can afford Haaland if the talk about his release clause being linked to Pep's renewal is correct.

He's simply not for sale. If he wanted to leave in 3 or 4 years? It would take a new world record fee.

Players like him and Mbappé will likely only move on free transfers from now on.
